This is wierd. When I start a new picture the area render button is greyed out. Yet when I open an older piece, the area render button shows up just fine. ANy ideas on how to fix this?

You can't area render a scene until you have rendered it at least once.  Poser has to load the textures/lighting/material for rendering and does that during the render phase.  Once it has done that once, you can area render as much as you wish.

Really? I swear I've area rendered before without doing an initial render.
I'll have to give it a try.

This isn't correct, you an area render at anytime.
