Hi.  I dabble on and off with Photoshop Elements 3 and working on a complex images using various rendered images out of Carrara 6 pro.  What I want to do is composite the pieces in Photoshop using various layers.  I understand the basic layer functions.

What I want to know is: Can I use a grayscale image as a mask which would allow me to take out parts of one of the images without hours of erasing by hand?

Secondly, if it is possible how do I set it up using the layers?

Thanks for taking the time to help an inexperienced user out.

Sincerely,

David

Well I am not a PS Pro but I use it a lot and I have found that most things can be explained and learned by simply looking in the Help>Photoshop Help off the top menu...usually works for me as it is a very good help page.. ...

Once in a while I look around,
I see a sound
and try to write it down
Sometimes they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

Attached Link: cut and paste into a layer mask

I don't know if Elements is the same but heres how you do it in photoshop: with your greyscale copied into memory create your layer mask goto the channels view paste into the appropriate channel

Hi.  I did what you suggested, and although I did not have the option to pick which channel I did figure out how to blend the layers together.  It still will take some playing around to get it to look right, but you have saved me hours of manual pixel by pixel adjusting.

Thank you very much for your help.

Sincerely,

David

Another way, that may work in elements, is to alt-click on the layer mask. That should open the mask and then you can paste or draw directly into it.
