Hi im very new to 3D, im doing an experiment which involves rendering 3d object onto a 2d image. where am i going wrong try to match the plane, can someone help me? see attached file

I am not sure of what you mean.  Are you trying to replicate the 2D image in 3D?

no i am trying to put a 3d object into the scene, but i am having trouble matching the camera perspective. what is the way to go about this, if it were a movie syntheyes could plot it, but how do i do it on a 2d backdrop see this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UsgnU140tw

 thanks for helping

To be honest, I have never tried to do this.  I would imagine that you first need to figure out the exact camera angle and location.  Next you will need to model the objects you want in the scene including any human figures.  I do not think there are any shortcuts for this.  As for the shadows. I would probably suggest creating a flat plane and putting part of the image on it to simulate the ground plane then put the top of the image on a plane in the background.  I would probably have the camera looking down at about a 20 degree andle to give it some depth.  Just a suggestion.  Like I said, I haven't ever tried to do this either.

Some photos can have a very strange angle or use a different zoom level. So if you dont have the values you will end in a try and error way. The best way is look to the horizon lines and match to your object, sometimes you will need to distorte your object to match the scene...

Look at this thread.

You might be able to ask mark a question, I still need to park a ship in my driveway but haven't gotten to it.  Perhaps after I finish the VTC videos :)

There is a product at Daz3D (ps_ac2442b) called Backdrop kit. This kit sort of does what you are looking for. You might or might not buy the kit, but look at the product information and see if it gives you an idea for setting up your scene.

A very good carrara tutorial on this is at http://members.iinet.net.au/~njfinlay/

Thanks suposer but the link doesn't exist now!, i have had a sleepless night but i think i have to use the buildings in the background as my XYZ and create a separate working plane at an angle!

In Carrara 6 you now have "Splat"----Insert>Splat. You can put your item onto that and place accordingly against your background image.

 Thanks
im not sure what you mean, when i put the splat in i cannot see anything, now im lost as what to do?  will it get the perspective? im only trying to get a working plane that i can add 3d objects to, but the photo is distorted!

Xerxes0002 posted Mon, 16 June 2008 at 3:46 AM

I am intriged by the splat.

here is the URL that works, http://members.iinet.net.au/~njfinlay/Tutorials/CarraraTutorials.html  (its case sensative, if nothing else go back to the root http://members.iinet.net.au/~njfinlay/ and click on tutorials then on CarraraTutorials.html

 thanks everyone

im shattered, I give up,2 whole days on this one!
There is too much lens distortion, i downloaded the demo of syntheyes to give it a whirl, but even that could not match the perspective of the buildings!

im going off to sleep and cry now, ive got a link to the actual image if anyone wants to have a go

A Rainbpw shader on a Splat (it shows up when the shader is applied) The background is a jpeg image The Splat can be sized and moved as required.

Thanks for pointing out this splat feature, BWTR. I'll be playing with it today. C6 really is cool, but I came in as a newbie to it and there is just so MUCH to learn!
One of my favorites is the difference between a background and a backdrop. It's in the manual, but when you first read it, it doesn't mean anything and is forgotten. After a few renders it makes sense and you wonder, "How could I have forgotten this?"

reclaimer posted Mon, 16 June 2008 at 9:47 AM

does anybody know why some backdrops distort when bringing them in (they look squished sometimes)
cheers

The aspect ratio (length to width) needs to be the same in both the texture map and the render output. The resolution does not need to be the same.

thanks very much, i should have realised...Dohhhhh

Splats(billboards) generated on an (now invisible) Terrain using the Surface Replicator. Still just a simple jpeg background image. Brian
