I built a scene and saved it. But when I try to open it, poser crashes. The file is 300,000 KB with 5 characters and a dozen props (mostly smart). I assume that is not too big for Poser????
My rig is 2.4 ghz dual core, 4 gig ram. Rebooting computer no help.
Any ideas? Will be a lot of work down the drain.

or ... hundreds another reasons ;)
Your scene is quite big. Most of mine "big" scenes were less then 10MB pz3 + 30-40MB pmd.
Search forum for pz3 viewer/editor. Maybe it help either.

What version of Poser are you using ?
What figures are in the scene ?
Do you have "Use external binary morph targets" turned on ?
The quickest way to check for a binary morph problem, is to move the associated PMD file to a different directory from the PZ3 and try to open the scene.
If you don't have a PMD for the PZ3, the problem isn't the binary morphs.
If the scene now loads, see this thread -> http://www.renderosity.com/mod/forumpro/showthread.php?thread_id=2717864

Poser 7 Moving the pmd did not make a difference. Scene did not open.
Is 300,000 KB .pz3 and a 100,000 .pmd just over the top from a size standpoint???
My scene is 2 V4s, 2 M3s, hair and clothes for all, lots of props 15-20
I will disable the "Use external binary morph targets." Should I check "Use file compression"??
