Here are some helpful notes about a few improvements in the SR3 updater and how they may affect you.
File I/O
The SR3 updater incorporates an important change when working with referenced content found in Poser scene files. Poser 7.0.4 saves files with relative, platform-neutral paths for content components such as geometries and textures whenever possible. In previous versions of Poser, paths were written that may have been either relative or absolute. This could potentially create problems when opening up scene files in a cross platform environment or when working across machines with different runtimes.
Poser 7.0.4 now writes consistent paths. The benefits to this change include:
- Backward compatibility with older versions of Poser on OSX
- Better portability when moving files from Mac to Windows, or vice versa, from one machine to another if the runtime locations are not identical, and when runtimes are moved on a system (such as when a new hard drive is added).
- Less clean-up will be required before sharing a newly created library item with other users.
Poser 7.0.4 now searches for referenced files such as geometries and textures next to the PZ3/PZZ that is being opened, if those referenced files cannot be located in either the current or main runtime directories. If your runtime files are messy and contain duplicate file names, the search process results may be unpredictable. Creating files with unique names with a runtime directory structure that resembles the standard Poser runtime setup will help alleviate future issues.
When adding an external runtime to Poser 7.04, the key word “Runtime” must be in the path for the search engine to properly locate your referenced content. In simple terms, your content’s directory structure should duplicate the standard Poser Runtime naming structure. At the top level, content should be in a directory named Runtime, which includes subdirectories that follow Poser’s naming conventions.
FireFly Render Engine
In the development of Poser 7.0.4, we measured several instances of increased FireFly rendering performance; however there are isolated cases where the improved quality of raytraced shadows, Ambient Occlusion, and Displacement/Bump mapping effects can result in slower renderings at similar quality settings. In those isolated cases we’ve improved, the final rendered results are far superior to renderings from previous versions of Poser 7.
Gareee posted Wed, 09 July 2008 at 8:32 PM
Also, not sure if it made it into the final release, but I just used a v4 with a clothing item, and the clothing crosstalk feature was restored!
Tiny had some hair room issues, got them to iron out those issues, and now she can release good quality furred critters for poser 7+!

Not a good start. I've had Poser 7 registered since I bought the SE version when it first came
out, yet the site doesn't recognize the serial number. I registered the number with SmithMicro,
assuming I had to do it again with the new owner. Still no dice. I don't have the time to keep
dealing with efrontier, and now SmithMicro screw-ups. Please let me know what the problem
could be. Poser has been collecting dust because of it's instability. If this has been solved, I'd
like to get back on the horse. :)

My guess would be a call to smith micro or an email would resolve your issues far faster then a forum post.
When I upgraded lightewave, I had to call them 3 times to get the proper info to make my dongle work properly. (And was on hold long distance for 20 minutes each time, no less!)
When I upgraded Vue6I, I ran into the same issues, the servers were flooded, so I couldn;t even download the patch, and after I had it and tried installing it, I STILL had to call Eon and again wait forever on hold until they could sort out my serial number issues.
Odds are, and email to them, or phone call tomorrow when they are open will resolve it quickly.

Ditto. I'm not so enamoured of Poser at present, that I'm willing to jump through hoops to
get what I paid for. At Present, I use Poser only for rigging. Other programs in my Toolset
are superior renderers. If I can't get SR3, Poser gets to stay as my rigger only, at least until
DS gets rigging. :)

No, according to what I've read here, and on the DAZ forums, some are accepted, some
aren't. Since the numbers not being accepted are registered, many from pre-orders of the
SE edition from efrontier, it might be that THAT is what is causing the problem. If so, they'd
better fix it. This is hardly the way to keep customers who were already pissed by eFrontier

I'm just not interested enough to go through the trouble, though I encourage others to do so.
I haven't used Poser, except for rigging, since it came out, due to stability issues, and have
since moved on to other software. I had thought to get SR3 and try again, since Starlet's post
mentioned that the stability issues had been addressed, but no. I have jumped through
customer service hoops many times, and it is always an exercise in frustration. Thanks

I went to site and did everything as told by efStarlet when the thread was posted. Went to SM's site which was a lot of leaps and bounds, then went back here to click on the link to SM's Poser page and did the SN of my product, only mistake I made was forgetting my own e-mail address. On top of that no problems, d/l the SR3, installed and the only thing I found different was that there's no e-f, just SM's logo with the same P7 splash screen.
Hadn't played around it a bit, but hope it would run smoothly tomorrow. Unlike the others, I'll keep my finger's crossed on this new update.

And when you install, make sure to click on "Create backup of preferences"! With the new logo Smith Micro it starts as if you never used it before in factory state and all external runtimes gone :(
Just use the backup copy of the libraryPrefs.xml from Poser 7 ...Date...Time... into your p 7 preferences folder and it works again.

This is the first SR in Poser history that fixes most of the problems I've noticed;
some of which (like the OBJ import bug) have been problems since P4.
Specifically, I thank SM for these fixes and changes:
-Now keeping focus on Graph palette while clicking & dragging beyond palette boundaries.
-Improvements to texture map location for preview and rendering
-Fixed case where switching off texture filtering would cause artifact to appear at seams of high-res tiled textures.
-Fixed case in which redundant Center of Mass props were written.
-Now consistently writing relative, platform-neutral paths whenever possible.
-[Python OBJ import] Now accepting any type of value <= 0 to disable scaling upon import.
-[Python] Added Scene.Resolution() and Scene.SetResolution() methods.

I suspect most Poserites don't concentrate on the PZ3, so it's not very important
for them. When I'm doing "serious" stuff, I have to keep lots of PZ3s with names
like "Chapter-2-Lesson-5-Cochlea-Closeup-2-revised.pz3".
Poser's preview window title chopped these off so that I couldn't tell which scene I'm
currently using. The top bar will always show the full filename no matter how long it gets.

face_off's stuff is easy to fix, If you're getting an error about an ambiguous parameter name, to do with -col, -column, etc.
There's a line of code that has col=something in a call to the Tk stuff. change it to column=something and it should be fixed.

So far the SR3 is causing my Poser 7 to act weird. The Material room is acting retarded. It's reaction to any clicking is very retarded in time. Before it would respond within 1 to 3 seconds, now it's response is retarded to 15 seconds to 2.5 minutes.
The renders are completely unpredictable. I had a set of renders that I have benchmarked as six hours in Poser 6. The first one ran in about 55 minutes. Hooray for that! The second one, I cut off after 28 hours+ when the progress bar was still at about 80% complete. Boo on that! I removed all the advanced material shaders and it seems to be rendering at some speed now and might actually render in six hours.
Rendering four threads is strange to watch now. Before it would render as normal, now it splits the screen into quarters and render each quarter seperately . Strange but usually gets the job done.
That is ALL the time I've had to experiment with. The renders DO look better, so I can't complain too much so far.

Do you have an ATI graphics card or chipset? If yes, then please update your graphics driver. If you deleted your preferences during installation of SR3 and the problem appeared, then you might have previously had the workaround for the driver problem enabled that we shipped in SR2.1. You could still do that, but at this point it's better to just get the improved driver from ATI/AMD.

Rendering in four threads was always done in four quadrants, no change there. If you had 'Render in separate process' enabled previously, it might have looked like it did it all at once due to how the results are read back.

My Poser 7 installation had been rock-solid without ANY glitches, or crash to the desktop problems at all. I've read about such from other users, but never EVER had that problem before. I am VERY dismayed to experience such now. As such, I am not a happy customer now. :glare:

enough trouble as it is, don't need more. I use it mainly for the Cloth Room, Hair Room and

I had this problem too. The first time it did this I was working on quite a heavy scene so I thought it was maybe too many texture calls. But it happened again on a single clothed v4. The odd thing was that poser loaded all textures -except- the clothing textures on both scenes. I rolled back to 2.1 which has been stable for me.

I have tried to install SR3 twice now, and when trying to use Python scripts I get an ugly application error that says MSVCR71.dll was unable to load.
Methinks it is part of the C++ redistributable, and it doesn't seem to be getting loaded properly.
ockham posted Mon, 14 July 2008 at 4:33 PM
The MSVCR71.dll isn't part of Poser's own install. Looking at the
main directory, Poser uses MSVCR80.dll, with a date that matches
the original Poser 7. If a script specifically calls for MSVCR71, it must
have installed the dll on its own.
You could try to download MSVCR71 from various places on the web,
then put it in the main Poser folder. These DLLs are available free from
lots of places. Google will show you where.....
evilded777 posted Mon, 14 July 2008 at 5:44 PM
Hey there Ockham.
I don't ever recall Poser installing a C++ resditstributable before. Daz Studio runs that installer as well, and has a version of that DLL (its the only place it shows up on my machine).
I'm concernced that that might not be the only thing missing.
nruddock posted Mon, 14 July 2008 at 5:57 PM
I'm betting that tcl84.dll and tk84.dll have been compiled against MSVCR71.dll and not MSVCR80.dll, just like the P7SR2.1 and before tcl83.dll and tk83.dll are compiled against msvcrt.dll
This sort of thing can lead to instability, especially with memory allocation (which Python does a lot of).

Poser 7 SR3 does not require re-installing from scratch. While doing so is recommended if you are experiencing difficulties with your installation that can't be resolved by discarding preferences, in most of all cases installing over an existing installation works just fine. Even if you have to re-install the application, that doesn't necessarily mean you have to re-install all 3rd party content.

Speaking of discarding preferences... one way of resolving this issue is to delete libraryPrefs.xml in your home directory (C:Documents and Settings[user name]Application DataPoser 7 or C:Users[user name]AppDataRoamingPoser 7 respectively).
If you have a lot of external runtime libraries linked in, or don't want to delete your library preferences for another reason, then you can open libraryPrefs.xml in a text editor and change the location of your main runtime from
<ContentFolder folder="Runtimelibraries" index="0" >
to
<ContentFolder folder="C:Program Filese frontierPoser 7Runtimelibraries" index="0" >
(assuming that's where your Poser 7 is installed and main runtime is located). This should resolve the issue without deleting libraryPrefs.xml.

Right after I installed SR3 my render times deteriorated from about 3-5 minutes to 30-40 minutes. Naturally, I assumed it was due to SR3.
I was wrong.
My problem had to due with a hair prop which I discovered by trial and error. Once I deleted the hair prop by render times went back to the normal 3-5 minutes. I wish I knew the name of the prop, but I changed it when I loaded it and my runtimes are too much of a mess to search. When I come across it again, I will know it.
In the process of researching I got the following input from SmithMicro
- SR3 should facilitate faster loading and about the same render time. That is my experience.
- Number of runtimes loaded to the library bar should have no impact on render time. Impact on load time is an open question. This has been my experience also.
- Increasing the render threads to match the number of cores was a big help.
- Irradiance caching will have no effect on Poser 7 render time. Apparently, it is related to Poser Pro render time.
Gareee posted Fri, 18 July 2008 at 7:06 AM

Multiple overlapping transmaps really kills rendertime.
Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.
JOELGLAINE posted Fri, 18 July 2008 at 8:01 AM
That is one of the things I found out through experimentation. Some hairs that had been fine to render in SR2,1 were suddenly 'radioactive' under SR3! Since I have a LOT of hair, I almost exclusively use trans-mapped because it usually renders quicker. Under SR3 that is NOT true. Some render the same, some cripple render times.
Same with some nodes. Reflection raytraced is slow, where the gather node seemed to cripple my machine. (Literally. It hit a patch of Gather and always crashed to the desktop!) Ray-traced glass sometimes rendered slow, or crippled speed or caused crashes randomly.
Since I didn't want to try to re-invent the wheel with SR3, I had to roll back to SR2,1. I'm used to what will do which foible in Poser 7 SR2,1, But SR3 in some ways makes Poser act like a different application altogether,IMO.

Yeah.. it's fixed and works properly now. Your solution is much like peopel hanging on to poser 4 for 10 years after it should be dead n buried.
there were some nasty bugs tiny reported to SM as far as hair rendering and developement , and SM worked REALLY HARD to fix trhings properly.
Rather then a roll back, I suggest an additional poser 7 sr3 install, so you can relearn the proper way to do hair in the fixed P7 sr3 hair room?
That way you have all your older hair you worked on, but can take advantage of the new fixes in place as well.

Ummm, but he said 'trans-mapped hair' - ala helmet hair, hair prop. How does that work in the Hair Room again? ;P
Quote - I almost exclusively use trans-mapped because it usually renders quicker. Under SR3 that is NOT true. Some render the same, some cripple render times.

But the quoted inference is obvious: trans-mapped hair DOESN'T render quicker under SR3 (than SR2.1). I've read it about ten times, and, yes, that is the inference. :)

Interesting? How does one go about doing that?

Maybe someone said it, but you can turn the raytracing for transmapped hair "off" under its properties, and the render time reduces. I usually do that until the final render, but to me I don't see much difference either way. Maybe some improvement around the edges..
Good luck

Folks seem to be in a variety of positions, and I can quite understand why going back to SR2 looks like the best solution for some of them.
I've had one or two scenes that fall into the fourth category, but most of mine fall into the third or second. I want to stick with SR3 if I can, but at the moment it's like trying to paint with a brush which squirts inappropriate splodges onto the canvas apparently at random...

People that have issues WILL post, because they are seking solutions.
But people without issues are just working as usual, without reason to post. Thee will always be a few people with some issues with any new program update for any program.
As I've said, theres no way any company can test for every single hardware and every single software solution, and there's never a perfect bug free update for any program from any company as a result.

...though it's hard to know where to post to stand a chance of getting a useful answer. When a thread's more than a page or two long it's increasingly difficult to find useful answers, especially when the thread also fills up with meta-conversation like this. Maybe it's time for a new thread specifically about the effects of the changes between SR2 and SR3...
Gareee posted Sat, 19 July 2008 at 3:15 PM
Well, this thread was originally announcing it's release, and was not a torubleshooting thread at all. Thread drift is commonplace, and people with sr3 will most likely find a solution in an associated thread.

...if they're lucky enough to find the right associated thread in the first place. So far this is the only thread I've found here which seems to be dealing specifically with SR2/SR3 issues in any way at all...
Gareee posted Sat, 19 July 2008 at 4:34 PM
There aren't a whole lot of sr3 threads at all, so there aren;t a lot to choose from.. ;)
Plus Smith Micro themselves have also replied here as well.. when you actually have the guys who worked on it replying in a thread, odds are you'll find the info you need here whenever they pop in again. Good reason to stick around, eh?

If you have a particular issue that hasn't been discussed you have two choices. Post your issue here and hope that the SM people see and answer it or start a new thread specifically for your issue and hope someone who has the answer in the community will have your answer.
Gareee posted Sat, 19 July 2008 at 6:48 PM
3 choices.. also contact SM direct, which is always the smartest option on new releases.

kuroyume0161 posted Sat, 19 July 2008 at 6:51 PM
Well, the first choice should be to contact SM directly. Secondarily, users can inform each other of their experiences which may help others having similar issues. Any time something doesn't work as expected (whether from the source or the user), the dialog between the company and user should help to resolve the issue or at least illuminate it. :)

hey, download went fine, installation went fine, but:
AnAn does not work any more ( none of them)
The hip detafches from the figure and places itself about 3" back.
Also the texture goes missing.
Any sugestions? The rest of the figure is OK, and the problem is not solvable.
Thanks, Tony

hmm iam gettings render speed problems too after installing SR3.
Mainly even though ive choosen 4 threads only 2 of my procs are used (using alt-ctrl-del) and only at 15% CPU usage!!! (before i was getting a 90% CPU usage from all procs). I tried playing around with the adaption Threshold and memory limit buffer but very little difference. it takes me now almost twice as long to render O.o !!!

You scared me a bit there, added my Anan runtime when i saw your post (deleted all prefs in the upgrade) and loaded AnAnR2 (new Judy), worked fine for me.
Sorry I cant give you any solution for your problems with AnAn just wanted to say that the character works ok here even with SR3
The only problem I have is that P7 now have troubles identifying some textures as valid jpg's (textures called on when loading some hair models), when i load the same textures in P5 or P6 they work rigth away.
I do however find the application more stable now as the random crashes are almost gone.

On the validation issue, if anyone is still having problems, I cut and pasted my serial and noticed that it had picked up a space at the end of the number. This would have led to an incorrect serial as far as the validator is concerned as it views a space as a character.

It certainly has some effect, but it's not the whole story.
Further experimentation has resulted in some improvement. I also learned a few things:- It is entirely possible that the Ambient Occlusion wasn't actually being affected by some surfaces in Poser 7 SR2. That would be consistent with what I say on this image. When it started to work properly in SR3...

Poser 7 slowed to a crawl with open GL enabled after the update. I did as suggested and updated my ATI video card driver. Now the Poser room works fine, but I'm still having issues with the materials room being very slow unless I switch to SCreed. Anyone else having this problem?
