ok, I am working on a piece...need the corner of a "room"(nothing fancy) so I take three of the squares from the primitives folder and make them into "the corner of a room"(two sides one floor)
make it all a OBJ file...and import it into my pic.
set a rather standard material to it all....and hit render....
the room starts to render,.....nice shadows from the figures BUT there are black areas on the squares(the "corner of the room"). So, I check out make sure there is nothing casting these rather annoying shadows and change the material and.....the black blocks again.
how do I fix this? no matter the material setting they are there...

Did you use the two-sided square or the one-sided square?
The two-sided square will always give odd checkerboard patterns in
Poser 6 and 7.
In other words ... if you used the two-sided square, start over again
with one-sided squares. Make sure each one is facing inward.

unless you goto the material room and check 'Normals Forward' for it's material, then that problem goes away.
