:b_blush:

I am seriously looking at some captures I made tonight. It seems the contributions above are all so spot on! Good stuff ladies and gentlemen!

Your collage is really splendid Shari, it is good to see the love and dedication you put into these forums and it shows in the amount of fun we have. Ok, enough of this mushy stuff...

By the way, can you upload anything Shari, or are you just talk?

Ronnie, shuffle through your pics, let's see what we can do do shake up this place, I WILL be back later...

I could not help but wonder if some of the structural damage was caused by the dynamite explosion of the 1930's. The place saw so many people and things pass during it's lifetime. Almost like a silent witness... Enough of that, lol.

I hope this works as an entry to the challenge.

I see "some" people have still to come up with a response to the challenge! :sneaky:

I see my fence has already been taken (Ronnie), and my garage (James) and I did have an idea about the old rice mill but ... too much like Piet's shot.  Beth's is great ... all in all, I guess I need to actually move around town a bit to come up with something...unless I can re-post that shot of the back of my house with the growing trash pile (refer to last month's challenge...)!

I'll be back.........

Meet Sally and William graciously dilapidating together. Or should I say snuggling ever closer.

The surfaces of the head stones are weathering. Much of the writing has faded.  William was a soldier in the War of 1812 (another lengthy skirmish with the King of England :-)). Looks like both bases are slowly sinking and poor Sally's stone has been broken off and roughly recemented with some very unsightly mortar.

Haven't found any crumbling buildings yet, but maybe this makes a better story anyway?

FORGED STEEL and after researching horseshoes this would be the kind glued on (also used for horseshoe pitching) If it doesn't fit feel free to delete it:-)

Went out for a short drive with Emma today and came across this, it used to be the offices for the cemetery then it got taken over by the grounds maintainence crew.  Its now up for demolition.  This is also my first attempt at HDR, although it was taken around midday I tried to make it a bit spooky being in the grave yard and geting on for holloween.

Hope it fits the bill.

Talk about locally exotic.  I never would have thought of this image for that challenge, but I guess it is!

We have moss EVERYWHERE!  On roofs, in lawns, even along the edges of shady driveways and roads.  If people here didn't clean and treat their roofs, ALL our roofs would look like this eventually!  I admit this is a very bad case, but it's really everywhere.  You know how they say moss grows on the North side of trees?  Out here, moss grows on the North side of EVERYTHING!

Look at Denise's mailbox pic.

Moss!

The weekend has arrived! So I got up early to catch the morning sun on a few shots.

I'm sure this boat is delapidating under all that bush. Perhaps with it next to the barn like that they are descendants of Noah and are keeping up the family tradition?

They say a picture is worth a thousand words...

So where do they go when a photograph leaves you speechless?

LovelyPoetess posted Sat, 11 October 2008 at 11:57 AM

I couldn't resist this rusty bunch of metal!  I'm not positive but by the look of the wheels, this was built before they invented rubber.

JeffG7BRJ posted Sat, 11 October 2008 at 12:12 PM

That boat is a real shame, it doesn't look that old but to let the bush grow around it like that, i cannot understand the mentality of some folks.  It doesn't look a cheap one either.

Excellent shot though and ties in with the theme fully.

As for the tractor, they put them wheels on for traction in muddy fields especially when harvesting such as potato's.

Another great shot.

Cool effect adding the sepia and the framing, makes it look like an old photo.

I've really been enjoying seeing what everyone comes across, and agree old and worn is usually much more interesting.

auntietk posted Sat, 11 October 2008 at 10:37 PM

Yes, but mostly on the north side.  As you see from the picture, most of the moss here is on the north side, and there's a little bit on the east side.  It has to do with how much of the day the surface in question is in the shade.  At this latitude, anything on the north side of something is in the shade all the time.  Of course if there's something under a tree, it gets a lot of shade, as well.  That's how you can find your way in the woods.  Check to see where the moss is thickest.  Unless you're in a termperate rain forest, in which case you're screwed!  :)

Interesting that at the top of the stone is a skeleton head, was the captain perhaps a pirate?

By way of answer to the previous post by LovelyPoetess, apparently, the skull was a common engraving used by stone cutters on tombstones in the early 18th century...at least in Colonial America (almost said US...got to keep my facts straight). There were both privateers and pirates sailing the Atlantic off the east coast near here but Capt Mulford wasn't one of them...they'd never have let him be buried in this old churchyard. Most famous privateer near here was Capt. Kidd. He buried treasure all around this locale. Some has been found...some not. The local leader, Lord Lion Gardiner, and the Governor complained to the King of England that Kidd was not turning his share of the profits over to them...the King declared Kidd a pirate and in 1699, the British Navy captured and hung him. Gardiner, the Governor and the King got Kidd's money. Just a little treachery among respectable thieves.

It's a shame when they leave them leaning over like this, the cemetery staff could quite easily rectify it.  Ours have started laying them down flat now if they start to lean like this.  Health and safety, someone might get hurt, I didn't know dead people could get hurt.

I went to a graveyard on Wednesday Ronnie, but there was a large padlock on the gate and I couldn't get in, there was some good stones in there that would have done well in this challenge.  I'm not sure if the lock was to keep us out or if it was just on for Holloween to keep them in. Lol.

When looking through some entries I almost didn't feel like uploading. Great stuff and I see a lot of fun was had by all.

For you who know a little about me, will know that I have been spending time at really old ruins and stuff lately and that it is influencing my style and work very much. I see things in a new (old) light while I have fun.

My entry is an old house, the main unit probably built between 1860 and 1930 and I planned to use it as a weekend getaway where one could make coffee and a fire and sleep over, close to the bush. In this house one can hear the breathing of a time before dilapidation set in... Babies born and people died. Some of you may even know who is on the photograph hanging there.

Anyway, let me stop the mushy stuff and congratulate you Shari, these forums are a lot of fun and you handle them well looking at the number of entries and the comments. 👍

Here's my number three. This store is still inhabited...not sure by who or why.

This is in the town of White Cloud, Kansas...population 238 in the year 2000.  White Cloud was built on the west bank of the mighty Missouri River.  It was a booming frontier town before our Civil War, 1861-1865.  Steamboats brought settlers, provided commerce and transportation back to civilization in St. Lewis. But the Railroad arrived in 1866.  Steamboat were done. Settlers moved west.  White Cloud was done.

Today its' claim to fame is it is one of the top ten flee markets twice a year. The other 50 weeks of the year it is mighty quiet.

Have been away a short time.. Very nice Pictures here at the challenge. So here is mine: I have only had ma Cellphone with me, so the quality is not the best... sorry.

Tara, you're good!  Now, take that crystal ball and Make it so I win the lottery lol

ghostbear .. what a great looking old store/station .. I just love it.  My husband loves these old gas stations... I will have to show him this one.  He moved an old gas station onto our property and will be fixing up an antique gas pump .. it'll be a cute display once finished.  (Although, he promised me a hand-made cribbage board 20+ yrs ago, and I have yet to see it LOL .. I doubt very much this station will ever get done.)  sigh

Cornelius, what an interesting piece of metal!!!!  At first look, it reminded me of a CARP.  lol  Great addition to the challenge.

Bill ... yours kinda reminds me of the Beverly Hill Billys LOL or is that Green Acres; either one.  I LOVE IT!!

marilyn - cool dilapidated THING.. what is it ?? lol

Magali - so sorry to hear about your loss (canon) .. how sad.  I'd be devastated if I lost my camera.  Great that you were able to nab Nats :)  Great shot! :)

Frankman, I should show you a photo taken by my cell phone .. you'd love yours all the more lol
Awesome old wagon you found there!

I only have time for one image and thanks to bmac62 for letting me know about this months challenge theme.   I didn't shoot it for the challenge but it was shot in October.  :)  (I'm 4 states away in Oklahoma trying to get my parents moved back to California)  Anyway, here's the Little Church from a different angle.    Lots of great images already, I browsed through them all.

Here's a second one from me.. One one of the back roads I frequent...I kept seeing this tall white structure off of the road..Eventually, I found a way back into it..

It appears to have originally been a place where  grains and  corn were loaded onto trains..
In it's last incarnation it appears to have been a place where cardboard and such were brought to be recycled.

The one road in,is quite overgrown, I'd guess it's been vacant for 10 to 20 years

Hello  to you all! Very interesting pics here and a very interesting theme! I love those old things, past and gone. They are so full of memories and stories......

This here is my part of the theme. I shot this pics some days ago as specials for this content.  This special place here was once Berlin`s  biggest railroad stations for freight trains. Nearly 200 trains came in and got out per day.....  Once: That means before World War II.

After World War II all trains in Berlin, even them in West- Berlin, were controlled by the Russians and the  east german "Reichsbahn", and they closed the yard, because it was situated in West - Berlin.....  Plants began to grow and now the biggest  freight yard in the city is covered with a 50 years old wood.......

The railroad station is now a park and part of a system of green areas in Berlin. A group of artists use it for sculptures and events.

Hope you enjoy it!

I am also not sure about how to get my picture into this forum o.O'.

I know that the topic says it has to be graceful. From my point of view this poor animal still has something graceful, but, sure, I'm often alone with my opinion. So if it doesn't fit or if you think it is displeasing please delete it.

Thank you and have a great creative day!

I made it. I suppose graceful is in the eye of the beholder... I happen to love the way these big shovels move. To me, it is most graceful. They dip, they swing, they are just fascinating. This is an old building downtown that has been empty for many years. It was nearly 80 year old and in such bad condition, the city finally ordered it to be removed. The water jet is to keep dust down and other things that might be floating in the air during the process.

I wasn't sure I'd find something to put in this challenge. But I made it. :-)

You made it with flying colours PJ, I like this capture, and agree that the backhoe can be a graceful machine, here in the UK, there are guys that actually manouvre these things to music, like a waltz etc, LOL, I suppose they have to have some fun eh?

Hello again1

Month ends now, high time for a last pic for this content.

It is the same location as the others: Berlin South Station,  a very busy railroad yard 50 years ago...
My intention was to show the steam locomotive here (yeah, they have a really steam locomotive here), but the locomotive was surrounded by fences and decorated with letters as " Do not enter", "Do not touch" or "Do not look at it" or stupid stuff like that. And they had painted this old engine new, and all the special mood was gone...... And then it began to rain and my accu was empty - but I survived, and this is important, tooo........LOL

It was a wonderful experience to work for this content. I´m looking foreward to a new theme.... I hope you enjoed it, too!

Sincerely your Billcody
