Number 3 shows the underbelly. The point backside is pointing down towards the ground in orginal images in number 1,2, and 4.

Hi Beth,
I've been having a lil look around and found some pictures that look similar to your spider.
Google "Jewel Spider" and look at the many images. Even if this spider isn't a Jewel Spider, could belong to the same family there somewhere :)

I believe you found a female Spined Micrathena spider (a spiny-back spider). Take a look here or you can google on the name...
