Every once in a while I play around with objects and light and get an unexpected effect. In this case it was a spiral Terrain with a glass material rendered with an HDRI.

Although it really isn't splitting/focusing light, it sorta looks like it.

interesting indeed, what does it look like at higher hdri settings? maybe the source of the effect becomes  a bit more clear then.. and what does the hdri map look like?

I would like to see a few of these on a textured ground with a bit of atmosphere

I'll play around with it more later today and post back here. I literally had thrown the mesh, mat and hdri together and hit render...then saw this oddity.

The HDRI is called "mausoleum hallway" and is available on Keith Bruns' site; www.unparent.com, the hdri settings I used are posted there above.

The Terrain had been placed right in the middle of the scene.

I just tried replacing the the Terrain with just a sphere (with the same mat), and it just looks like a normal render.

I did have the Max Ray Depth and the TIR pumped up, so I put it back to its default settings, and the light casting looked the same. Must just be the shape of the Terrain making this effect.

Interesting shape too - sort of looks like a ZPM like in Stargate.

... the effect makes me think of how I once got the Bryce4 sun to cast visable rays in that the angle that I had to put the sun at inorder to achieve it  wasn't where I would have expected the sun to have to be.    

The ZPM looks a litle bit different :)

I've played around with it, it's the mesh that's doing it.

Most likely causing the multiple light sources from the HDRI to go off in radically different directions. I've tried multiple hdri's now, most have similar effects.

After season 10 the last episode of which didn't really lend any closure to anything, two movies were done: "The Ark of Truth" and "Continuum" a third is planned but I'd catch up on the series first as they continue after where the series left of ...and after watching all that and through season 5 of Stargate Atlantis, then you can tell me if Agent Smith's creation doesn't sort of look like a Z.P.M.
Stargate Atlantis is ending it's run this fifth season and there is a movie for that one in the works too.
There will be another spin-off of the Stargate series next year sometime but Amanda Tapping won't be in it as her new enterprise, "Sanctuary", will  be taking up her time.
