Subject: Poser pro: service pack worth it?

Just firing up the poser stuff again, and I noticed that there was a service pack available for poser pro (I'm running win xp32)

I recall people moaning about the service pack when it first came out-- what's the current concensus? worth installing? Things work OK now. . .

I'm running poserpro with sr1, and I don't have much problems, only with the openGL mode, but I think that's a  graphic card issue because I had that problems also before  I installed the service release. I think the major improvements were in the export-modules. I can't find the specifications.

Bopper.

hate to but in, but I am a poser 7 user. what is the big + if thinking of upgrading to poser pro? I am just a casual user creating characters then using C4D for placement in scenes...ie, interposer.  It's all working now so not sure if I want to mess things up...thx for the advice!!!

If I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn't have bought it . . . it has a few advantages. The Lightwave plugin just came out, and I like rendering in LW.

There's also some improvement in how it handles multiple runtimes-- seems a little more responsive in handling big libraries.

As others have said, its barely a "Poser 7.5" -- not a "Pro" version. Smith doesn't seem to know there audience. . . why would I do distributed rendering in a clunky render engine? If i were doing that sort of thing, I'd get it into Lightwave or 3DS, and use the very superior render engines there.

thx croc. i think i'll stay put then. if they changed the runtime stuff then interposer will no doubt break or require an upgrade too. i render in C4D; not sure if that's any better:)

Its better.

Firefly isn't terrible-- there are some things about it that are actually very good (like the displacement). And I like the node editor. But speed/quality wise there's no comparison with a pro render engine-- C4D has a VRay engine, right? Much faster, much more powerful

not sure what c4d has, but i do like the render facility there, but it does not render any faster then firefly really on our macs, unless i put up a render farm in c4d, then it gets a little faster. i have yet to read anything good about poser pro vs. 7 (which I think they finally got right after v5 and 6) so I guess I will stay put there.  like i said, it's all working okay kinda...i think what's causing a few problems is all the mac os upgrades, but not sure...cheers!

I bought it to be able to export to Maya and that is still broken for me.

I hadn't heard of PPro SR1 causing any problems; in fact it fixes a lot of really annoying ones. I'm with crocodilian: it's certainly not worth the money, the only advantage being that it renders a bit faster (40% or so).

The added functionality is available better through 3rd party products.

The distributed rendering is frankly amateurish, far too clunky and unreliable.

Nope. A waste of money.
