Yeah, since I can't be bothered to render something just for my own tiny self, I've decided to ask any one of you interested in a Bryce mini-contest to challenge me to do something. I just think the competition might kick-start me back into creating something.
So here goes: Challenge Drac to anything you feel like doing in Bryce. If you can do it better, Drac will [insert whatever you want here].
done. I will accept the hardest of all challenges presented here. Once I accept the hardest challenge, anyone else can join in on that specific task. At the end, I shall declare myself the winner, or ask the mods to judge, whichever I feel like :)

as the link says...how 'bout this?...all Bryce would be the challenge...textures , animation linking etc. .. ...
Once
in a while I look around,
I see
a sound
and
try to write it down
Sometimes
they come out very soft
Tinkling light sound
The Sun comes up again

no no no.. come on, there has to be a certain limit of decency and common sense.. i'm not backing out, i just don't have the time to do an animation..
bobbystahr posted Sun, 12 October 2008 at 2:21 PM
well the model in any case...maybe he can do his own linking etc. .. ...

How about this? From photo gallery here at R'osityNo fair using all those photoshop splash brushes. Must be 3d render with minimal post work. I say it is next to impossible.
draculaz posted Mon, 13 October 2008 at 10:17 AM
do-able. would take forever to render, but do-able :)

fine, i'll do it :)
skiwillgee posted Tue, 14 October 2008 at 7:30 AM
Okay then, some ground rules.
I know you will most likely win or at least forever declare you did even if I or someone else beats the socks off you.
Okay?
Who all is in and wants to see if the drac has lost his touch? I'll give it a shot.
draculaz posted Tue, 14 October 2008 at 7:35 AM
i'm okay with that... will take me 2-3 weeks, probably.

Way to go Drac. I cannot wait. Realistic dynamic ocean water has always been a holy grail that is unachievable for me. Good luck.

this challenge sounds very interesting....and I thought I remembered seeing a tut by gary and catherine some time ago on how to go about creating crashing waves in Bryce. When I did a search though, this one by our own Zhann came up first....and it is a good one too.skiwillgee posted Wed, 15 October 2008 at 9:22 PM

I'm familiar with that tutorial by Zhann. Her tut led to my first image I thought was good enough to upload four years ago.I'm trying to stay true to Cardinal Bryster and do this in Bryce, but the metaball wave and the mats I keep applying are making my machine very busy and finicky (read crashed about four time already even with 4gig of memory). I may have to figure out how to model an organic wave in Wings or Hexagon if this keeps up. Here is what I've got done so far. Got a looooooong way to go.
@ uvdan
I've seen your organic skills in wings3d. Why not model a wave and enter the fray?
50parsecs posted Thu, 16 October 2008 at 12:11 AM
Wow! Draculaz is going to do a Bryce landscape (OK, seascape) and skiwillgee is contemplating using a heretical app to help him "enter the fray"? Has the world turned upside-down?!! And where does the ubiquitous, and righteous The Bryster weigh-in on all this?
UVDan posted Thu, 16 October 2008 at 1:29 PM Forum Moderator
**Hey another HEXAGON user!!! WOOOOOHOOOOO! It is not me you have seen using mad skills in Wings3D. I am modeling in Rhino 3, Hexagon 2.5, and Carrara 6 Pro. I was looking at your metaball wave and thinking perhaps an extrude or a sweep in Hex combined with minor point pulling would get the job done. I think it looks great, but too bad on the rendering crashes. We should categorize Bryce renders by how many machines you have to hook up to get the job done.

open query to drac,
How is yours going. I gave up on bryce model and I'm learning wings on the fly on this. I've got the wave modeled but smoothing it as a solid causes weird things to happen I don't understand.
skiwillgee posted Tue, 11 November 2008 at 7:04 AM
Hmmmm, no response from Drac. Maybe he bit off more than he can chew or the moon has been full too long.
I will be ready in about another week to post something.
If Drac doesn't respond, does that mean I win and will be getting everyone's babies?
I resorted to Wings3d to build a wave. I've been trying out some different stuff in Bryce and am leaning toward multiple renders and layering them in 2d app to get desired effects.

I'm looking forward to seeing your results too. If I had a functional drawing tablet I would enter this fray using the alpha of 3DCoat's new volumetric modeler. Making a curling ocean wave would be a doddle using that app. Some fantastic modeling coming out of 3DCoat. It is much more than a "poor-man's Z-Brush, Modo, or Mudbox".
skiwillgee posted Thu, 13 November 2008 at 10:03 PM
This is simple wngs3d model of wave I used as an .obj
I'll start uploading a simple blow by blow over next few days.
You can model a great curling wave in Bryce with metaballs but any complex additions and materials will leave outlines of the primitives all over the place. If some one knows how too have overlapping primitives with volume mats that don't leave artifacts, please share with me how to do it.

I thought Peter Sharpe had one I downloaded all his tuts before his site went down but nothing there I know I saw one years ago on how to make a wave like that in Bryce. Am still searching I lost all my old sites so not sure where it was could be gone like Peters too.
