Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 03 8:59 am)

Building a chair to scale, huh? I've got just the tutorial for you. ;-)If you're looking for some simple aids to scaling, try the following two links:
http://www.sharecg.com/v/40765/view/11/Poser/Poser-height-measuring-rulers
http://www.sharecg.com/v/41322/view/11/Poser/Poser-dial-driven-measuring-tools
These are measures for use in Poser and DAZ Studio, and are also designed to be suitable for import into a modelling program to help in scaling your models.
When modelling they need no textures; you can see the numbers on the scale of the rulers in wireframe mode. Read the ReadMe files though or you may miss some of the pitfalls, like the problem that occurrs if you forget to switch off scaling when importing into your modelling program.
I use the same 1 unit=8 feet (96 inches) as I believe it's the best one to use. It's the most commonly used, as most modellers have ignored the scale changes since that scale was announced.
Just for the record: one Poser Native Unit for the present Poser versions is 8.6 foot. Note that is a decimal point there! The distance is not 8 foot 6 inches but (8*12 + 6/10) = 103.2 inches = 2621.28 mm.
And for those who like to play with the materials room: The P-node returns the xyz co-ordinates in the rgb channels in units of 0.1 inch.
I have a problem with Antonia... I'm making morphs for her, and with certain face morphs, her teeth and tongue need to move along (like to make a long face, or a morph to move the mouth up and down...). For such things, you have to actually translate the body part instead of placing a morph to move it, or when rotating it will move out of place (like the eyes), because the joint center doesn't move along. But there are no translation dials for the inner mouth! There are for the tongue, but then the tongue moves alone and stretches, leaving the teeth behind. I've checked the cr2 in a text editor, the translations are not hidden, they just don't exist.
What to do? I could use the new Animated Joint Centers, but then I'd restrict the use of these morphs to those who have P9 or PP2012, and I'd like to avoid doing that.

How are you going to distribute the morphs? If you'll be using any kind of pose insertion method, the pose can also be used to un-hide the translation dials. If you're distributing as .cr2, the dials can be un-hidden in the .cr2. In either case, you could specify the translation offsets as well, if desired.
Or you could get more complicated and insert ERC to move the jaw or eye actors along with the morphs. This might be less advisable, since it could create unwanted complications in the end user's Antonia .cr2.
If you'd like instructions for any of this, I can dig them up. Or Les Bentley or another expert might happen along.

I know how to make ERCs, that's what I wanted to do. I'm planning to distribute this as a PMD that's loaded by a .pz2 with the morph groups and such... but what I meant is: I tried to un-hide the translation dials, and noticed they DON'T EXIST. Antonia's teeth don't seem able to be translated by themselves, as if they were a forearm or something.

Oh. Huh. I guess I must have pasted them back into my personal copies.
The translation dials are standardized in all of the actors. You should just be able to copy the dials from any actor and paste them where you need them. (You could even paste more than one copy of the dial, as long as the names are unique.) The dial sensitivity settings may be the only place where you'd want to pay attention to the details of the dial you copy.
I'm not absolutely certain that a pose can insert a translation dial, though. It seems like it should be possible, but I've never tried it. Hmm. Some tests may be in order.

That. I have no idea how to even do that.
I remember now that, in Antonia's freebies site, there is a morph pack that comes as a .cr2 instead of injection. I wonder if odf would allow me to distribute it that way for a commercial morph package (because I came to a point of commitment to it that I want to get some profit from it, besides I was told Antonia needs more representing in the marketplace), pointing to her .obj in geometries which wouldn't be included in the package. This would save both me and the users a lot of trouble preparing stuff (mostly me. Working with PMD+INJ seems like it will be a nightmare)...

Antonia's full .cr2 is freely redistributable, which is one of the wonderful things about the figure. Odf has given his work to the community. :woot: (Edit: cross-posted with jancory!)
But distributing morphs in some insertion format might be more convenient or accessible for the end user.
I'll see if I can test pose insertion of a translation dial. I'm curious now about whether it will work!
Edit edit: If you'd like help with .pmd creation, one of us can help. I converted the full body poses on the Free Site from .cr2 format. Usually it's not too difficult.

I've just checked my un-edited Antonia.cr2 and it looks like the translation dials are present in the eyes and both jaw elements. Which .cr2 are you checking when you find them missing?

Hmm... if you want to test it for your own curiosity, then I'm very fine with it, please let me know if it works ;) (and if it does, I'd love to know how you did it)
Insertion can be good really, but I was thinking (errr... highly hoping, dreaming high, you name it) this might be Antonia's version of V4's Morphs++. So I'd like it to be easy for other people to work my morphs' dials to make characters for distribution.
So far, I was thinking, a PMD is a PMD, an user wouldn't be able to insert just the morphs needed and redistribute it while still requiring the morph package to be owned by the third user (and that will be required, this won't be a merchant pack). So, for any buyer of a character that uses these dials, the person would have to inject my product, and then the character.
Might as well include both a .cr2 and an injection, so each person will use it as they see fit....

Now I'm wondering if I'm just missing where they are sigh The eyes are there, and visible, easy peasy - already slaved their translation (and scale) to eye morphs. No such luck for Upper and Lower Jaws...

Found the translations! They were waaay down at the bottom of all morphs, had to use PZ3Editor to find them. Hidden, yes. Ok, this makes it easier :3 thanks for your help!

ohki--the jaw trans dials are in there, but are hidden by default (hidden 1) & are not in the groups list. i was able to unhide them with d3d's unhide dials script.

Erm. No, it looks like the dials can't be inserted by a pose. Which baffles me a bit, because I thought full actors could be inserted pose-wise, but I could be mistaken about that too.
However, I worked with a fresh copy of the Antonia-1.2.cr2, which was installed from the Antonia-1-2-0.zip. This fresh .cr2 had all of the translation dials in place, so I had to delete them to do the insertion test.
So I guess the question is, when and where did you download the .cr2 you're checking? Possibly the main Antonia download has changed since I downloaded my copy. The real concern is whether an end user who has downloaded the proper, formal, current Antonia version would already have the trans dials in place or not. If they would, then there's no need to worry about insertion.
And... never mind. See, always read updates to the thread before posting a response.

Yes, I found them now. I usually unhide manually in the .cr2 with a text editor, but I wasn't finding them in the text. I did now, everything solved. Thanks ;)

And here is the result, it's my new texture with scatter node applied to all body parts and Subsurface Skin applied to the eyes.

No postwork at all, pure Poser render. :)

SubsurfaceSkin is not the best by far.
Go to the RDNA SSS for humans thread.
I prefer assembling Scatter, Diffuse, and Blinn myself in good combinations.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
BB, I've been visiting RDNA and trying to learn how SSS is done.
You've posted some great looking images as examples there.
I like the scatter for the body better than the Subsurface Skin but Not sure how to add it to the eyes.

I'd like to recommend that limits be set for Antonia's joints. Not forced, but simply activated when Use Limits is selected in Poser.
A few reasons:
Sometimes it's easier to pose a figure by activating Use Limits then moving the limbs around and then turning it off later to tweak, if necessary.
Might be easier to work with her if IK is on (and Use Limits).
It's Problematic to pass add-ons for Antonia through marketplace quality control without limits to check clothing and other accessories against. I mean, obviously it wouldn't make sense to check a neck Turn at 120 degrees but without limits, it's harder to come to an agreement in testing.
I realize that Antonia is open to direct alteration and redistribution but it would be a little better in this area with something "official". Besides that, I'm highly considering simply creating a "limits" pose that can be applied to the figure, if it wouldn't be objected to :)
Just my 2 cents there.
.
Oh I TOTALLY understand that :) I've been there a few times. I just didn't want to come off as being critical without it being constructive. I really like Antonia and I have some projects in the works for her (and some to share freely). I just want to be able to present those offerings in a way that isn't going to be a little sketchy because someone wanted to dial a limb to some obnoxious value. :D
Maybe I could sketch it out this weekend and set it up as a pose that you can apply (with an undo pose) and the folks here that love Antonia can look at it offer critiques? I'm cool with being on the receiving end too if someone else already is moving in this direction.
.
I have a question as well. There is still a very slight crease in the leg hip bens when the thigh is at 70X and 70Z as you can see it is slight. Should I just leave it or put in a JCM? I am inclined to just leave it since it only appears at extreme bends. But a small JCM would likely not interfere with clothing either I dont think?
Quote - No, no effect on the weight mapping at all. :)
On your crease, it looks minor to me... Though I'm not a hyper-critical person when it coms to human figures. One less JCM is one less of that to worry with on accessories :)
That is my inclination as well. And odf may be able to fix that small crease with the weight maps. He is much better than I am at getting things smooth. So good, I can stop worrying at it.
Hm, maybe I'm off base, but with the extremity of the pose there, I would think there would be at least that much crease in real life. No?
At any rate, that looks pretty amazing. Thanks for your work.

@odf: After all these years spent with Antonia I completely understand. I almost had the same feeling and had days where I had to push myself to work. Now I found a new drug named PoserPro 2012 that cured the syndrom (and gave me another one instead :win:).
I think we had this issue many, many months ago when I had problems with twisting finger joints... and then forgot about it. Yes, limits would be nice (only such that you swith on by choosing "Use limits" in the menue) and some things would be easier, for instance the work with Puppet Master. I am planning more poses in a while and so this would be handy. So far I prepare the limits in the figure on my own (most of all fingers and the feet and their parts) but as I prefer to set up a new scene each time I convert poses this is pretty tedious... You have to load the figure directly from the runtime, then use Puppet Master to set it up and then change the limits so unfortunatly saving the figure back to the runtime with limits is no option. The figure is not usable anymore for anything else after the Puppet Master setup.
And you, Netherworks, are working on some goodies? Great, really great, whatever it may be I know that it will make me happy.
By the way: As soon as I understand enough of the new subsurface scattering I will release additional material-settings for Toni Polygon in Poser 9/2012. So far I am following the threads of bagginsbill at RDNA and I am still learning and experimenting - I like my results but they are yet not worth to be published as more as I was not able to get the eyes match the "feeling" of the skin.
About the litte crease: Imperfect - but human, isn't it?!
I'm not always right, but my mistakes are more interesting!
And I am not strange, I am Limited Edition!

I plan on my offerings being as cross-compatible as possible. Keep in mind that the whole figure doesn't have to be one-way or the other with weight maps and I think Diogenes is doing weight-map touch-up work. What this means is that it is likely still possible to design clothes (or whatnot) for the core figure and it will work on the weight mapped version if you're only fixing bends and such. I don't think dynamic cloth will be affected either. Or smart props.
So people could likely still use either version without much fuss... Antonia already bends great so don't feel too left out :)

Sorry I didn't include any. I had meant to, but was hit by heavy Poser fatigue.
I have proposed Joint Limits for Antonia. If anyone wants to look it over, feel free!
I got all body parts except BODY, waist (which is the central body part), and the upper/lower teeth (okay to leave them alone).
Attaching the pose. Put it in a pose folder, load Antonia. Apply Pose. Limits are now set so that Use Limits will lock to recommended values.
