Subject: Is there a way, an application something, that will enable me to see graphically

I have a bunch of stuff in the layers panel that are part of a complex object, and it's hard to tell what the layers are by the names.

Is there an application (or a way of seeing in Vue) the images or a 3d rendering of the separate layers so I can at least tell what layer name is associated with what object? I need to delete and edit some but poking around layer after layer is slow, tedious and time consuming.

I have Vue 6 Pro and what makes it even more difficult is that I can't expand the side panel to see more of the names of the layer objects (although I can scroll but that's not very helpful when you're dealing with long names).

How do you pros deal with finding an object in the layer panel when you are trying to delete or edit that object( that make up a larger object) when there may be hundreds of layers there?

Did that make sense?

Thanks.

Michael

I think I understood. Yes, your situation is not easy. I normally create a new layer, move that big object to this layer and I ungroup it. Then I have the individual sub-objects as isolated objects, but I still have them more or less grouped because they are all together in one layer. Having them as isolated objects, you can now select each sub-object by point and click in the different views. After all adjustments are done, you can group them again.
Now, I hope that all I wrote is possible in Vue 6 Pro...

Thanks. Not what I was hoping to hear, I'm sure you well understand.

Seems like there must be another solution out there.

I'll use your techniques, but they are time consuming in themselves, sorry to say.

Thank you.

If you could create a tool to do this, what would it be like? To tell you the truth, I can't imagine something much simpler than what was proposed so far.

Of course, the ideal would be that the object components would be named in an inteligible way. That is the case with many commercial objects, where you have components named "door", "window", "roof", etc. But specially in free stuff you often find "box1", "cylinder2", etc. Whoever created the object could have named it properly but, hey, it was free so you can't complain... :-)

Just one note: your impossibility to expand the side panel doesn't exist in more advanced versions, which makes the job easier.

A side note/caution on ungrouping in layers. I do that myself when I am sorting through a newly created object the first time in Vue. It disconnects the link though, so if you then go back and update the .obj or other original file from another program, Vue wont see it and give you the opportunity to pass the update through into Vue. This is only a factor if you are creating or editing objects using another program.
