There is no way to check mark the "Visible" portion on the item, but the item is broken down in the Materials room. I can make the item say a hair ribbon appear transparent but it appears as a shadow. I don't want it to show up, is there a way for me to do that in the Materials room?

To make something fully transparent in the materials room, set Transparency and  Transparency_Edge to 1.0.  Set Transparency_Falloff to 0.0.  Set the specularity to 0.0.  A completely transparent material should not cast any shadows.

Just one little point to note though...

If you use AO in your scene, even a fully "transparent" material may still give some occlusion on nearby surfaces, as seen in the attached thread "Not quite invisibles".

To prevent this, you also have to check "Invisible to raytracing" for the transparent object.

Ooh.  I didn't know that, IsaoShi!  Good information!  This is why I love this place!  :D  :D  :D  :woot:

The AO problem would explain some rendering oddities I've been seeing in my own efforts.  Hmm.
