I got evicted on the 22nd, right before Christmas. Lawyers don't care for the holiday, but that is already known. I hope to get off the streets ASAP. Right now I'm living in my van, and using PC's at the public library system. I lucked out this time! I have one with a keyboard with letters still on it!
Being impoversihed, juvenile diabetic and having had two strokes suck, but it could be worse. I could be in Africa, or even in New Orleans, who are STILL waiting for government help.
That doesn't make me happier, though. I lost my book colection, and comic book collections, and almost all my funiture. I have a mini-van, so limited cargo roo. Dammit. Losing all my model ships REALLY pisses me off, too. I had one of the Cutty Sark, 3ft long and museum quality.
I'm hoping for a better future.
ANY help would be appreciated. Throw money(if ya have any and want too!) at me at paypal at joelglaine (AT) aol.com without spaces and a @ dealy instead of the (AT) stuff.
I've been posting here for a long time, and have been writing a story and publishing it here as part of my therapy of using words. A lot of people like it, and I hope to be back ASAP and putting more stuff up.
I can't upload ANYTHING from a library terminal, so it might be a while. THAT eats me up,too. I'm so stressed out, I can barely think some days.
I hope everyone had a better Xmas than me. I had a better Xmas than a neighbor of mine did! He got shot and killed in the complex I used to live in!! My life could be worse, but at least I'm still kicking ass and taking names.
Life is better than vice-versas. AND less boring. Looking at dirt all day is like watching grass grow., except LESS exciting!

Hi Joel
I'm sorry, I tried and failed. We were going to put the plain folk figures to market then set up an artist relief fund. Our competition "t-boned" us though. On top of that the engineer charged us $150 an hour to design and build Caleb's gate trainer. The final cost was the equivalent of two brand new cars. I won't be able to recoup until tax time.
We're still going to set up an artist relief fund when the mark 4 figures go to market. In the meantime we'll scrounge around and see what we can come up with.

Excellent link! How should we set this up? Would the Artist Relief Fund be through our community here at Renderosity?

So sorry to hear about this Joel!! Do you have any friends you can crash with until you can get back on your feet?? If not maybe check your cities social assistance options? Federal govenment does allow for help either financial and or boarding for emergency hardship cases like this. Just google "insert city name" and social assistance and you should find links to phone numbers where you can speak to someone about getting you off the street and out of your van asap!!
I hope this helps and if I could help financially I would but after Christmas presents for my daughter and $500 emergency dental bill I'm strapped right now!
Take care and I know your situation will improve!!

Hiya patorak, I don't think Rendo can sponser it, but one can go in, start the fundraiser, and ask any and all who want to donate to do so. Might need to ask the mod of the forum if posting a link here is ok..if not, you can always use sitemail, and others can contact you for the link :) The fundraiser host would collect the money into their Paypal account, and could then transfer the funds to the recipient. If the goal amount is not met in say 26 days, then all funds donated so far go back to the ones who donated it and nobody pays anything. However, if it looks like the goal might not be met completely..say it's 'almost' there, but time is almost up, the host can go back and edit the needed amount to something smaller, thus insuring that at least some of the money is collected.

I wonder then if we could set up the fund and ask the mod at the community forum if we could post there, maybe a sticky too. We'll also have to give some thought into setting a realistic goal, given we only have 26 days. It may not be much but it would be a start. I would imagine after the 26 days we could renew the fund. It would be nice if we had at least a minimum of three trustees, more would be most welcome though.

Sounds great! I agree, where there is a will, there is a way. I'll get a hold of Milivia, The High Waver, and The Boys, and see what we can come up with on our end.
You know, this is something that needs to be done. Next year, the economy will get even worse. I know the other day, Milivia told me they're starting to get upper middle class families at the soup kitchen.

Have you been able to apply for disability or food stamps or anything? I don't really know your whole circumstances, I'm sure you've done everything you could think of...no one wants to be living in their car that's for sure.

Don't even go there! You watch too much BS news. There are many people like me who lost thier homes and jobs for trying to do the right thing and not take advantage. You really have no clue. The truth is most decent hard working people got the shaft end of story. Unfortunately that's not the story that's told because the media would rather prey on negativity for ratings.
Joe keep a positive attitude. Do you have any distant relatives or friends you could stay with for a while? You could look into finding a homeless shelter http://www.homelessshelterdirectory.org/ or some kind of faith based organization in your area You may be able to collect unemployment atleast until you can get back on your feet again. I was going to suggest government assistance but when I googled it I saw this. http://www.lahomelessblog.org/2008/06/keep-your-car-or-receive-government.html I doubt it applys to all states but I would be wary of asking the gov for help.

I didn't spend any money on Poser since the Strokes. PERIOD. I spent time creating imges because I COULDN"T WALK OR EVEN HOLD A FREAKING PENCIL! I HAD TWO STROKES!!
Two. It takes spell-checker and a lot of patience to hit the right keys with my fingers. I practice making images because it motivates me to get better. I need rehab, which the local state gov WILL NOT PAY FOR. SO, I rehab myself as much as possible. It is grueling getting limbs that almost don't work to do anything. I get out and shuffle around for at least an hour a day to try to keep fit.
I'm doing better, but I'n still screwed up to hell and gone. Vocational Rehab has quantified me as severely handicapped, so I can't qualify for unemployment. I have applied for Disability abd all the SSI bullshit, but it hasn't come through yet. I've been turned down like almost everyone who applies, abd have appealled it with a lawyer. I'm hoping something might come through this year.
I have checked with local churches and such, and the sad, sorry news is they are strapped by the stock-market crash, too. there is SO many people screwed by the situation, they are all broke in the area.
I live in Nashville, Tennessee, and there are over 10,000 homeless in town. I'm just a face in the crowd here. No friends locally, they all moved on to other places. I have plenty of people I talk to world-wide on the net, but no one local. No family either, they all died in a house-fire when I was 12.
Rehabbing myself IS a serious thing. I had over $27,000 in IRA and combinged savings when I had the first stroke. In over two years, I went through all that. I checked into all the government programs and got some help, but not enough to actually stop me from ending up homeless. I am working damned hard on surviving and being told I'm frivilous for spending my time trying to restore some kind of function on my own is ignorance personified.
I spent my money on doctors and medicine and survival. To assume otherwise is foolish at best. Because I nvested in something I love WHEN I was on TOP, why am I being kicked while I'm down.
I REFUSE to be invisible like most homeless, and will never go quietly into the night. If I didn't need help in the most desperate way, I never would have mentioned it here, because of heartless and ignorant people.
HOWEVER...That aside. I do thank those who have helped me. I have a thick skin and have dealt with people on the WWW for a while.

@Patorak and other, thanks for all the effort, I really apreciate that, too.
Just because I can access a library PC, WHEN THEY ARE OPEN, doesn't mean anything. The public library doesn't allow uploads or downloads. As far as my books and otherstuff, they trashed them over the weekend, They're all gone, now. That's life. At least I saved my PC's, so I can restart over again. I lost everything I own before when I went into the hospital in 1981. The apartment house I lived in burned down, while I was there. My stuff was fine in the basement, but I could never get anything because the rest of the building had collapsed and was blocking access to it.
At least I got to pick and choose what I'd take for a couple of days, this time, so it wasn't too bad. Days to pick through, is so much better than a fire or flood or twister, where you might have seconds or no time.
On the good news side--I have applied to public housing and might be accepted within the month at a disabled person's apartment house for Elderly and Disabled! It'll take a month to process the paper-work, and I should know something after the fifteenth next month! All I havce to do is survive for a month and I might have a place to live.
You may now knock on wood, where available! Oops! Out of time already. The library only grants an hour of this stuff! More news as it breaks, later!

Hang in there, Joel! I think some posters just skimmed the original post and missed the stroke part. I have a friend who had a stroke - he sounds completely normal on the phone - but he is paralyzed on one side. His short term memory and vision were impaired. But he can't get to a Social Security office and they always blow him off on the phone because he sounds normal. If it wasn't for the VA, he'd be really out of luck.

Yeah, Human rights is a joke. Housing and rent go up constantly and stay up high, but never come down. If rent, housing was lower, more money to spend, more jobs, cleaner cities, and paying power/phone/water bills wouldn't be a problem. I lived in the streets for weeks, and did pick up my footing again, that was over 10 years ago. But today it is different. The way things are going, I can see myself pushing a cart in the streets, in the future due to cost of living under a roof, and no one could care about housing/rent problems, even the human rights couldn't care....no one. And the rich live in beauty big homes, with parks, and pools as their back yards, 10 marble bathrooms 10 lux cars..

I know that. Unfortunately, that IS part of the problem! THAT is the reason why Social Security turns down almost 99,62% of all first-time applicants. On appeal, you turned down 86.72% on second application/1st appeal, UNLESS you have a lawyer! Then the appeal passes at 80%+ (no exact numbers available on that statistic). It leads to wide-spread graft, corruption and abuses in the whole network.
The payment comes from the payback to first appeal. My lawyer's pay-off is $6000 from the bulk settlement of back-dated SSI payments with-held in the system. A LOT of that $6000 goes to kick-backs and bribes to the "right people" to get me onto the system, I'm sure. No acceptance, they get no money!
I've talked to over one hundred and twelve people about it, and they all agree about the above details. The figures I got from the Bureau of Statistics.

Joe was this a court ordered eviction?
Or did the landlord just tell you to get out?
I don't live in the great state of Ten. But is it not the law in your state that a landlord must give you a thirty days notice if they're going to evict you? And then if you don't leave, file in court to have the court evict you?
Wich usually takes yet another thirty days or so.
The reason I ask that is because thats the law here in my state, and based upon our laws, and what you say above it sounds like this was an illegal eviction in the first place.
Also Joe I live in Ohio. And I've got a little extra room in my house. The social service here in this state are actually a little bit better than in some states too. So If you can make it here, you are more than welcome to stay with us for a few months while you get on your feet. Provided you could handle my partner and I, and my Dad coming by to take care of the dog and cat while I'm gone. If I had a better car I'd even come and get ya. But with the car I have now, well lets just say that if I did that, we'd both be on the streets stranded.
Oh and don't anyone start thinking I'm a nice guy either. I'm still the mean coordinator.

They did give me 30 days notice, and it was a court-ordered eviction. I don't have gas to make it to Ohio. I am hopeful things might get straightened out within the next thirty days or so. My ex-boss ,of all people, is helping out some. He's letting me park in the back of the shop and I've set up an electric cord for a space heater in my van.
There is no living space in the basement of the shop, but there is a bathroom and hot water. Conditions are a little post-apocalyptic, but seems survivable for right now. The break room has a refrigerator for my insulin, and a micro-wave. No place to sleep, but survivable. It's better than a cave which early man survived in, so I'll live.
It's not great, but better than a LOT of people have! I don't have a fixed address, or bed, but more security than I did before the new year's day. I am glad I stopped by where I used to work on Wensday afternoon.
I appreciate the advice and help and invites folks, more than I can say! Anyway, that is my situation as it stands right now. I'll update as I can.

Yeah, See Phan it's not unusual for union commercial and/or industrial construction jobs to employ a couple hundred or more people. Hell, to build an iron producing blast furnace requires at least 300 people. The refinery expansion is 2 miles by 3 miles, when completed they will refine oil piped in from Canada.

Infact if things would have worked out as I'd hoped I was going to pay for a hotel room down there for you for a few months.
I know it's not much but I also wanted to encourage you to keep your chin up. I've been where you are at right now myself a couple of times in my lifetime, infact I once lived under a bridge in hobotown for a while. So trust me when I say, that I can assure you that things will get better. Joel,
You said it. I"m a service related disabled veteran, have had two heart attacks, have a congenital neurological disorder, and constant sever lower back pain/ problems with my spine and they're always trying to cut me off.
The good news though is that your appeal should be answered soon if it's been three months already. Appeals are usually answered within 90 days. At least here in my state they are. It may vary for you though since each state administers disability claims themselves. So you know you'll probably have to go to their doctor too, as well as to a "informal" hearing, if you haven't already. And if you've gotten an attny the good news is you'll probably be approved, and you will get back pay from the time you first applied since you appealed the denial. I myself had to wait for over two years as you've done, and I got quite a nice little back pay check, in excess of ten grand infact. Which I think will more than cover getting your new place. .
So just hang in there man, you've already done the best thing anyone applying for SS benefits can do when you appealed and got an attrny. So you know though, once you do get approved, wich I have little doubt you will be, going by what you've said is wrong here, start saving a little bit of money every month if you can. For the attrny you'll need oh about every three years or so, because they'll review your disability claim and try to cut you off and you'll have to appeal and go through it all again. (I'm assuming your not elderly).
I think they do that, thinking folks will get tired of jumping through their hoops and just go get a job somewhere.
For some reason the point that a person is DISABLED and thus by definition cannot work seems to be lost on the SS administration.
Oh and man if your liscence is revoked please don't drive. If you were to get arrested for driving with no liscence/plates/tags etc... you will lose your appeal. Because you can't collect SS disability while in jail.

Social Security lawyers are a laugh! I had one when I was turned down on diasablity. He sat in the judge's chamber and didn't help at all. I was refused SSI or Medicaid on a state level. I appealed and went down to DFS for the hearing. They had a lawyer to do the interview for DFS and as luck would have it, I went into , not one but, several seizures and he said enough. He passed me for medicaid, then I passed for SSI and at last my social security. It was a two year battle. If your state has medicaid, apply for it and SSI. If you get those through, you'll get the social security too. My thoughts are with you and if I get a few dollars to spare, I'll try to send but I'm not sure on that.

My wife and I are praying for you. Don't give up hope. After working for years, we both went back to school to try for something better. Money is tight right now, but we'll send you what we can. We're both from a "developing country" as some like to call it and so I can say we're very used to corruption in business and government. But, the amount of chicanery going on here and now, amazes even us.
We live close to West Virginia. Our local church organizes, once a month, a job fair for anyone interested. Web designers, artists, hairdressers, cooks, accountants,...just about anyone you can imagine shows up to these events to both help people like yourself in need or to look for employment themselves. They also provide free groceries, hair cuts, counseling, and other services that are sorely needed to whoever comes. I would add my voice to those saying, please check the local churches and see if there's anything like this in your area.
Things WILL get better. There are many people out there who STILL care. The trick is finding them ;).

You have some offers for places to stay in other States. If you aren't able to drive, what about using some of the money people are sending to you to buy a bus ticket to one of the places where you have been offered shelter? A bus is cheaper than gas and you don't have to worry about the car breaking down and having to find funds to fix it. You can even take stuff with you on the bus in the shipping compartments.

Thank you, one and all! The stuff I got from all of you is saving my life and sanity. For that, I'll always be grateful. I got something about angelfoodministries from my Caseworker.
Some hopeful news: I have a shot at getting an apartment in the Vine Hill Towers, in Nashville. It's Section 8 housing (which means rent controlled, not crazy in the military. Jeez, why couldn't they call it something else?). What I got here, on-line, means I now qualify for it! WOOHOO!
I don't know if I'll get it....but I am hopeful! Say a prayer, and knock on wood, and do any superstious things that might help me! I might just have a good year after all!
More news as I can get to computers and write (and as news happens...duhr.). Vine Hill is good because they have an exercise room, laundry, and security all inside. It is for disabled and eldery (which I'm still a good fifteen years from!) and I talked with people ealier who work there. They seem a good, hard working, jolly lot I can joke with and we got along right well with.
They are working hard to get me in and I passed all the hoops and background checks with flying colors. Now I have to see if something happens.

Joel - unfortunately I'm not in a position to send you any money, however I have an idea that might be able to get you a few bucks each month.
I'll create some models for you, which will be sold at Vanishing Point under an account in your name. Every month you'd recive the money for those sales. If anyone else wants to help, they could also provide models as well to be sold under your name.
Apart from any unavoidable fees that we have no control over, like things such as Paypal, VP will **NOT be taking their vendor cut **for any models uploaded under Joel's name . So as you'd recive as much money as possible.
Obviously you'd be responsible for declaring it on that WC-19 tax thingy that Americans have to fill in, and any vendors chipping in models will have to complete the vendor agreement, and 3 promo piccys, but only to make sure all the legal stuff is sorted. Apart from that no one, including yourself will have to do anything else. VP will take care of the rest.
Then once you've got back on your feet let us know and we'll give any moneys raised to another charity or artist.
So if you're interested - IM me your paypal email address. It will take a week or 2 before I can make something but that gives other people a chance to chip in as well.
If anyone else wants to chip in = please IM me.

The good news is that you got in that fast to even apply for section 8. Up here, there's a waiting list about three to five years long.
I'll be praying that you get your section 8 certificate. It really is a good program for low icome and disabled people. Especially since once you get your certificate you can go anywhere with it so long as the landlord will accept the rent subsidy from them. Plus they really do (up here at least)look out for the tennants, by that I mean they'll go after a slum lord real quick like on your behalf.
The only drawback/pain though is they come in and inspect the house/apartment etc...once a year. For health and safety hazards. So always make sure there are batteries in the smoke detector. (They dinged me once for that, damn thing was always going off if I used the oven so I took the batteries out and forgot to put them back in when they came to inspect).

I wish you were in this town.
I live in Rochester, MN --- home of the Mayo Clinic. If you are in need, they won't turn you away. I recently went through cancer and with surgery the bill was about 46,000. Through the Mayo foundation and other grants they reduced it by 40,000.
There's so much community support here, that it breaks my heart to hear about people liek you not getting decent human needs met.
If you ever feel strong enough to move here, there's many programs that help you get started. I mean really get started. there's one organization that bought a hotel just for homeless to get a good place to rest. There's also Ability Building Center that works with disabled or otherwise challenged indiviuals to procure jobs within their abilities as well as other programs that assist with rehab. There's housing up the wazoo for assisted living. There's also a program that helps with first rent and deposit, food shelf, community clothesline, even beyond the state food stamps. Being a medical town of over 1,500 doctors, these programs are well funded and well taken care of.
How do I know about all this? I've been there, on the streets, and found these things through trials. Never once did I go on welfare, but I did get enough assistance to make a difference.
I also understand that larger metro areas may not have the support structure that our little city has.
My heart is with you.

BTW - what are heat centers ?
mrsparky,
In some American metropolitan cities that have extreme winter condition (subfreezing temperature, etc.) they open up shelter with heat for people whose home lack heat as well as the homeless who do not want to go to the shelter. These centers are only short term response to the weather condition.
That is what heat center is. Hope this helps.

Hey turtle look at the situation closely and think on what YOU would do in that situation I know i wouldn't worry about it that much and I'm sure that Joel is not driving all over the pace since he obviously can't afford much gas. So its not like he is driving all over the place just cruising down the road having fun in his van filled with only what he could fit in from his apartment which is all he owns in the world.
Think before you post people.
Im just a broke ass college student running off grants or I would send you something myself Joel. Stay safe man and good luck.

Some people can't help looking down their noses at others. His driving is minimal, and it's
not like he has much choice either. I agree with the above. Think before you post, and read
the WHOLE story.

A couple of posts in this thread were deleted by the posters request, but I do echo her sentiment. Joel, if at all, you can get someone to drive for you, please do. If not for the sake of others, for your own. I lost 3 very important people in my life 11 years ago because the driver of the other car didn't want to let his wife drive after not taking his anti-seizure meds...he had a seizure, and hit them going 75mph. He didn't fare much better after that, and I'm sure you can't afford the hospital stay right now.
I hope for good for you, and that you will get help soon. I've been in your situation, a year ago, as a matter of fact. I was evicted this time last year, and sold everything I could to make it to where I am, and I'm just now starting my life over again. Luckily, I found help, and work that I could do, and I don't think that I could have done it without the help of my friends.

Living on disability is not all some apparently crack it up to be. Trust me.
Now I realize we all don't have the same experience's, but in my experience, once you do get your disability, after fighting with government pencil pushers who don't have the first clue as to what a headache is, much less a disabling medical condition.
Every so many years these same pencil pushers will "review" your disability as they are doing mine now.
And if the pencil pushers in your state are anything like the one's here, they will try to cut your disability off. (Because then the state can keep that money for other things Which I hope President Obama will put a stop too.)
One of the things I get my disability for is a genetically inherited diseas that is a close cousin of parkinsons diseas. I, um shake, my hands, arms, fingers, neck, and head shake, and tremble all the time, and sometimes, I'll have involuntary hand/arm "twitches" that will cause me to throw or drop something if I'm holding something. Yep I can't even draw a straight line with a pencil. There is no cure, and no treatment, and as I age it will only continue to get worse. But like clockwork every few years, especially when the state has budget shortfalls, suddenly I'm cured, and I can go back to work now as an O.R. Tehcnologist, to hear the pencil pushers tell it. Now seriously, who in the hell in their right mind, would think a patient would let me come anywhere near them with a needle or scalple? And what surgeon would in their right mind, with medical malpractice being what it is, would hire me?

Joel - hope you're feeling better now.
Jenx - would you object if I posted a message in the Poser forum ? With a link to the product -advertsing the bits we're getting together for Joel.
DaSquid - there is a way you can help. If you can model you could make a few bits for Joel. Even creating a few texture sets for the bits we have so far might help encourage a few more sales.
Daidalos - we have that same cr*ppy system in the UK. Never been through it personally, but been with friends that have endured it. BTW -
Have you ever tried a low dose of beta blockers ?

I got a room at the Vine Hill Towers. I only have the two computers, two chairs, and 2.5 lamps (orig 3 but half of one got FUBARed in the move) and 15 little boxes.
No bed or internet, but it's cheap and warm. Laying on linoleum beats laying on frozen dirt or van seats. My hands are killing me and are all purple and such. Got a doctor's appointment on Monday to check how they're healing and such. I'm taking loads of anti-biotic to prevent gangrene in my hands. I like counting to ten on my hands. I hope I still can in a week or so!
I think so. I can feel so much pain from my fingers, none are going to fall off or so. I'm still really naseous from the hypothermia, so I might spend all weekend on the PC or laying down next to the heater. At least things are looking up.
More updates as they become available.

Good idea. My modeling skills aren't what I would like them to be but I'll see what I can do.

Send me a link. My memory is for crap right now. What is it?
Updates: GREAT VIEW! I'm on the tenth floor of the new place. I'm overrun with roaches. Sort of like WALL-E. One roach might be a pet, one HUNDRED is an INVASION! ick. At least it's warm. They DID spray the place, so all the bugs have gotten a good sniff and are staggering out and laying down. I hope to DIE, NOT to sleep off their high like a slobbo roommate! Damn!
Cinder block construction. Very...institutiional. Fire-proof, but looks like an abandoned school or something. Very third-world. Almost expect Hamas militants to hole up in the place and the Israelites to start bombing the place. Must be because I saw a CLONE of the very same building in the Gaza strip on the news. Except it was blown to crap.
At least I'm confident that my building can make it through air-raids pretty well. If I had an internet connection in the place, I'd be happy. Bugs and all. It's very "Judge Dread" looking. I don't have to look for the future...It found me.

Thank goodness you have a place to live again!! Low rental housing isn't usually the greatest, but it's what you make of it. Once you get your disability you will have some funds to start accumulating "stuff" and getting internet and making it feel more like a home.
Sending lots and lots of vibes that you get your disability soon!!!

Joel - That sounds like Hotel Hell. Do you have any army surplus shops near you ?
These places are good for picking up stuff like cheap sleeping bags and folding camp-beds.
Dunno if you guys have these in the US - but if you ask groups like the Salvation Army, they often have 'furniture stores'. These are places where they can provide cheap or free furniture including beds and matresses, tables etc etc to anyone who's on a low income or just got a place.
Jenx - thanks for that. Any news yet ?
DASquid - Thanks. I'll IM you shortly with a download link for the first model. The 2nd one isn't finished yet. We've got little 'uns with us for a bit , so it'll be a few days before I can start on this again.

I'm checking into furniture places right now. "Hotel Hell" sounds like a new Ratracer set. LOLOL It is more like "Hotel Limbo". Hotel Hell isn't so well painted, or have such a grand view.
Open both sets of windows there and get a forty MPH breeze rushing through. With the train passing outside, it feels like a runaway train! Wheeeeeeeeee! Living on the tenth floor gives a great view, though. I got to look on the bright side of this stuff or go crazy.
