I have just an Athlon Xp 3000 + with 1 Go of Ram under XP 64 and Poser 7 work well, ok it take a long long long time for render but while this time i do other thing !!!!

Why absolutly buy a computer ( MB CPU RAM what i know more ... ) only for poser ???

My configuration work well for what i do anytime ( always the long time i agree ... ), i dont want change it just for one software !!!

I've got about the same setup with one difference.... 2Gb RAM. I added 1GB extra RAM and it makes a world of difference! Everything is a lot faster now. You don't need a new machine, but get more RAM is definitely worth getting.

I spent 2 hours last night rendering a Poser pic (kept pullng up Task manager to make sure it wasn't Bryce...;) I'm probably going to go out this week and pick up more memory. That's a lot cheaper than a new PC. However, I think Poser tops at 3 Gig of memory (with some 'handle' added to a command somewhere..;) at least under XP.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

everything under xp runs a maximum of 2 gb user space and 2 gb system space in memory per task.  there is a /3 gb switch that allows an application designed for it to address 3 gb user space  memory.   Looking at page fault statistics for the virtual memory swap file can tell you if more real memory will give a significant improvment.

With 4 GB of system RAM currently going for about $50, go to 4 if your motherboard will handle it.  XP is limited to using a bit over 3 GB, but some system overhead will load first.  32 bit XP cannot address space above 4 GB, so that's the real barrier.  You may not be able to use all 4 GB, but you will give your system as much as it can use.

Now that's a weird combination of CPU and OS. The Athlon XP series is pure 32 bits, it shouldn't even be able to run XP 64 bit. The fastest AthlonXP was the Barton core series, up to 3400+.

It may have been a typo, you may have an Athlon64 3000+, those exist(ed) too. If you really have an Athlon64 based system AND Windows XP 64bit version, I'd advise you to cram as much RAM on your mainboard as it will hold - XP 64 bit will use every byte of it, and everything will run smoother, not only Poser.
The Athlon64 architecture and Windows XP 64 bit have a limit of 128 GB (as far as I know), and there's no way your mainboard can hold THAT much RAM.

Thx svdl for your explanation, my cpu is a real 64 bits, but that what i want say it's not for poser !!!

Do you understand ??? I think i've take a bad explanation ... groumpffff !

Um, do you use a different processor for poser? You will get a lot better performance (for everything, not just Poser), with more memory. I would recommend at least a total of 4GB if you are running XP. On my old machine, I found that expanding from 512MB to 2GB even made Microsoft Office run faster.

All he means is that Poser 7 will not make use of the 64bits, only Poser Pro does when rendering. Poser 7 will not benefit from the CPU, it's 32bits still, but it will benefit a lot when upgrading memory, especially when running WinXP64. If you run WinXP Home then 4Gb is a waste, it cannot handle more then 2GB.

4GB is not a waste. XP Home can handle 2GB per process. With only 2GB, you will lose about 1/2 GB to all the resident junk that accumulates in Windows (your printer etc.) With 4GB, you can still be running your browser, even photoshop while a render is going on. (You will have worse speed performance, but not memory problems.)

The below table is from the Microsoft Developers Network website.  Windows XP can address 4 GB of RAM.  Beware that this limits total usable RAM to 4 GB (including RAM reserved for Video on your video card, as this must be addressed by the OS).  32 bit XP Home will use about 3.2 GB, but can load memory resident executables and video ram above this limit.  Again, the sweet spot is 4 GB installed as, while it will not all be used, you will have the maximum available before inevitable swaps to the page file begin.

Physical Memory Limits: Windows XP

The following table specifies the limits on physical memory for Windows XP.

Version Limit in 32-bit Windows      Limit in 64-bit Windows Windows XP 4 GB                                                       128 GB

Exactly right. I run a 2.66Ghz Core2 Duo with 4Gb RAM on a 32bit XP system. /3Gb switch enabled.
Poser flies compared to what I ran it on previously. (P4 3Gb with 2Gb RAM. Same OS)
My rendertime is 10-50% of what it was before my new system taking a standard single V4 scene as a benchmark.
The biggest bonus as far as I'm concerned is the number of models I can import and render with the increased RAM. I was limited to two Vicky 4's before the upgrade. Now rendering complex scenes with 5 or 6 generation 4 figures. Forget OS. Forget Graphics card. Throw as much RAM at Poser as it will take.

*"Now rendering complex scenes with 5 or 6 generation 4 figures.*"

I don't call that complex at all, for me that's a normal scenes. I can easily do that on my 2Gb machine..... actually I've gone as far as 24 fully dressed and textures M3/V3 figures on my machine. Of course, it takes a lot of fine tuning the pc, but once you do Poser can handle amazing complex scenes.

My regular scenes are 4-6 figures with a complete enviroment around them, that may be a city, furnitured house or landscaep like a forest. Poser has no problem handling and rendering them at 2000x1871, at times I've still got half of my memory left over.

The attached scene is what I do call a regular scene, nothing complex at all. Each figure is morphed and uses a different body texture, clothes in this scene are all the same, but it varies per scene. I had to downsize the image to be able to attach it, original it's 2000x1871 pixels.
