Morning!

I'm on my new computer and it's OS is Vista 64 bit. Does anyone know how I can:

1. Stop all the, "Are you sure you'd like to do this" messages?

2. Stop the color scheme from changing after I've done something?

3. Get rid of the Magnifier that appears at startup?

4. Get rid of the Narrator that appears at startup?

5. Is there a way to install a program even if it says not 64bit compatible? For instance, I went to download a trial version of a program and I first received that message. When I called up the customer service for that program I was told to disable UAC. I did that and the program worked. I got that not 64bit compatible when I tried to download something else. (UAC still unchecked)

You can still purchase XP and I'm using XP Pro 64-bit.  It's going to be a loooooong time before Vista hits either one of my computers.

I was told new computers aren't shipping with XP.

They aren't, but you can purchase the retail version of XP from NewEgg.com or Fry's Electronics (either at your local store or online a frys.com).

I bought my 64-bit XP Pro at NewEgg for $159.00 and wouldn't give it up for the world.  I'm getting ready to buy XP Pro for my roommate because her computer was running ME.

1. Launch MSCONFIG by from the Run menu. (Type MSCONFIG into search box.)
2. Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down till you find "Disable UAC" . Click on that line.
    
3. Press the Launch button.
4. A CMD window will open. When the command is done, you can close the window.
5. Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

I agree. I have been using Vista 64 bit for 3 months now after buying a new sooper pooter with it preinstalled.

I have had few... if any... real problems. Poser Pro runs like a dream... Vue 7 runs like a dream.

I wanted to get Carrara 7, but understand that it wont run on Vista 64 bit without a lot of hacking, so... I am running Carrara 5 which... runs like a dream.

The only program I am having real trouble with is UVMapper Pro. It runs okay, but I get a grey box effect when trying to select areas of the texture template which makes it very difficult to select vertices, et., precisely.

I have found Vista 64 bit to be very stable... no system or program crashes. Personally... I wouldn't go back to XP now. But... I am keeping an eye on Windows 7. Don't want to try the trial version and will wait till the full version is available and see what the user reports are like.

and to download your old Poser 5, Carrara 5 Pro, PaintShop Pro ver 7, Vue 5 Esprit etc.  use the compatability mode (it goes back to Win 95).  Under the Vista help menu, it tells you how to do it.  Go to help contents,>programs, tools, and games>working with programs and tools>program compatibility>make older programs run in this version of Windows.

The reason why I stated my programs, if I can get them to run in Vista, probably any XP software will run using Vista.  Jan

I DO howeer recommend leaving all the search functioins intact, because the vista search engine is pretty spiffy, if you don't cripple it.

Vista 64 works like a dream once you do those things (such as listed by ziggie above, and maybe a bit more) to get control of your own computer back. I don't have my "good" work machine internet enabled so I can completely disregard and disable all the "for my own good and security" pains in the arse. 

Secondly, for whatever it's worth my experience (and advice) is different from Gareee (with all due respect, of course):

I say, forget and abandon the molasses slow and functionally retarded Vista search function and instead install the freeware Everything Search Engine by VoidTools,  you will be very happy that you did.

Besides, Microsoft support for XP will be ended soon.  Get used to the next OS level.

Oh that's how you get to the RUN menu! By typing MSCONFIG into the search box. I was looking for RUN through START----->RUN and couldn't find it.

These tips are great. They'll come in handy until I get the money to get XP Pro. After shelling out monies for a new computer, I'm spent!  I might can tolerate this system if I can get all these things to go away!

Aha!, So that's why it won't work on my machine properly, it only works after a fresh start, I complained in the daz forum, but I didn't get any reply. I reported it in the buglist, but no reply. I suppose I will get an answer when it's fixed, but I don't expect that to happen. And I was feeling like an old whine!
It runs perfect on my 32bit-vista laptop, so I can work with it, BTW, I bougth recently a new computer for my with vista preinstalled, but I also got disks for a XP-installation. I suppose they got to much complaints about Vista.
All my other programs run perfect on vista 64: poserpro, vue6infinite, hexagon,autocad(64 bit), the only problem I also have is with apple QTVR files, which simply don't work even after the latest upgrade.
With windows 7 arriving this autumn, I don't suspect that many software companies are eager to upgrade there programs to vista.

Windows 7 (Beta testing it at the moment) is very nice actually. I'm running the 64 bit version and it's stable.
Otherwise I run Vista Ultimate for the main OS since my puter died.
I didn't reinstall Carrara yet... and it has me worried now, seeing that it doesn't play nice with the 64 bit version.
(Though I have a feeling I'm going to ditch Carrara for Vue some time, so not sure if I'm even reinstalling it...)

I just saw there  was an update for Carrara 7 to 7.1, but when I looked at the fixed list I didn't noticed any vista64-fix at first glance, it's a long list so perhaps I overlooked it. There are may things I like more in Carrara then in Vue, like the modelling features. So  for me Vue can't replace Carrara. I hope they will fix it.

I have just bought the Carrara  6 Pro to Carrara Pro 7.1 package 5 minutes ago. I know its not supposed to work on Vista 64 but am going to give it a try anyways.

Carrara 5 Pro is running fine on my Vista 64 bit machine so I don't understand why 6 Pro and 7.1 Pro shouldn't.

At worst... if it doesn't work I can still run it on my XP system.

I have Vue 7 on Vista 64 bit and it runs fine, but... I just can't model with it.

I would be lost without one version of Carrara or another. I have always used it for modelling and all my freebies and for sale products here at Rosity were made entirely in Carrara.

Oh WOW..!  So.... totally weird.

Just installed the new Carrara Pro 7.1 on my Vista 64 bit machine and.... it..... WORKS..!

The strange thing is... I installed the upgrade from Carrara 6 Pro, but.... haven't got 6 Pro installed on this machine.

Have tested several features so far and all working fine... including loading Poser content from Poser Pro Runtime.

Also renders fine and... very fast..!

I did the latter and no new box popped up.

Hit the Start (Windows symbol)...  in the pop up.. select... Help and Support in the right hand panel.. etc... etc....

I've tried all the Windows versions from '95  to Windows Server 2003(Service Pack 1) and am still getting that message for my Anti-virus. My Antivirus ran on XP with no problems. Choosing "Windows XP service Pack 2" didn't even make it compatible.

If you look... when you go into the Help for Program compatibility modes... it specifically says to be very careful about running Anti Virus programs in compatability mode....

Yes I saw this. And so I ran the Antivirus manually. That was an option it gave. I decided to do that in lieu of using the Wizard for that reason. What I did was right click on the .exe>>>>>Properties>>>>Compatibility. Then went through the list to see if any would work.

Also, because I'm such a computer dunce, I DID follow Gareee's link to backup my registry etc in case I make an error. I saved it on my external (J: drive).

Does C6 Pro have the same issues? (I don't have 7.)

Well.... I found that Carrara Pro 5 runs okay on my Vista 64 system and as stated earlier found out that Carrara 7.1 Pro runs fine as well. Haven't tried C6 Pro.

I've had no problems with Carrara 7 on my machine (i7 with Vista 64), just upgraded to 7.1, I'll have to see how that works.

Mind you, I have all the fancy crap turned off (no Aero, or sidebar).  My system looks like it's running Vista! lol.

I held off on buying Carrara 7 because all the user reports said that it wouldn't run on Vista 64 bit without a lot of hacking.

But I bought C 7.1 Pro a couple of days ago while the 65% off offer was still available, with the knowledge that I would probably have to run it on my XP system.

But... I tried it on my Vista 64 bit system and it is working fine... even with most of the Vista bells and whistles switched on.

C 7.1 Pro actually switches my Vista 64 to the basic none Aero set-up while it is running, but it automatically switches back to Aero when I quit out of the program.

Very pleased with it so far.

This is starting to be very frustrating, I downloaded the new 7.1 update, uninstalled the old one, and reïnstalled the new one. And it still doesn't work. I think there must be some software or driver or my machine that just doesn't like Carrara 7 pro. And it's strange: Carrara 6 pro worked without any problems, but after I installed 7 it also refused towork anymore. Even after several un- and installations.
I'm getting nuts of this.

No... Aero is the fancy Vista interface. But... it uses a lot of system resources so most peeps knock off at least some of the Aero features to speed things up.

Well I finally got Carrara7 working, it looks like the mother of problems, the displaydriver was the cause. After updating the driver, Carrara without any problems (so far).
I feel a bit stupid, because usually this is he first thing, I'm looking at when I have this kind of problems.

Is there a way to download the old XP folders?

I put thumbnails in the beginning of each of my folders so I'd know what the item looks like. In XP, I was able to see up to 4 thumbs. I preferred it that way so I could see the different styles and options I had for an outfit.

The folders in Vista don't show my thumbs the way I'd like them to.

I went to Control Panel>>>>>Appearance and Personalization>>>>Folder Options>>>>View

But I didn't see an option to do this.

My monitor is so dark I can barely see what I'm doing in Poser. There's too much orange too. I went into Display Setting and left it at 32 (the highest) as instructed. This is still too dark.

when I buy/get Poser content, I save the webpage/read me and install into one folder, and also, images, so when I view folders, I see pictures thus making my searches for suitable items for my work a TON load easier!

vista 64 bit = the proverbial dogs bollocks, would never wanna go back to 32 bit XP ;)
but, you do need lots of RAM to get best of it.

Yes, I like to view it using "Large Icon" too, but even still, I don't see all how I'd like to. You may see one or two thumbs "peeking" outside the folder.  With the old folders, I could put up to 4 thumbs in the front and view different textures/styles for one outfit. Sometimes when I'd look for an outfit, I'd think, "Hmm I wish such and such part were invisible". It can be...with transmaps and so I'll put a thumb with the original outfit, then any thumb with additional poses which transform that outfit.  This way I know that it's capable of much more (diversity) just by looking at the folder.
