Just a heads up that Carrara 6 Pro is free on the cover disc for the April edition of Digital Arts magazine. It is on the shelves in the UK now, a bit later for the States I would guess.

I assume it on a DVD not a CD

This is good, just picked it up.  Also came with an extra issue in the bag (Nov 08 issue) . These mags can seem quite expensive but well worth it when you get something like this.

Now I've just got to learn to use carrara:)

artbyphil posted Thu, 12 March 2009 at 7:58 PM

Cheers I'll check them out.

Been messing around for ages now since I got it home , Think I'm going to like this. Best £5.99 I've spent on a mag for ages. Been trying to figure out soft shadows, I assume there isn't just a slider like bryce? or if there is I seem to me missing it.  Also do they kill the render times like they do in Bryce?

suppose I'll have to drag myself away and go to bed at some point :)

Was out looking for the mag in Book stores. while doing so, came to mind about if the software comes with a serial number? I dunno, but that was on my mind about it. I decided to get Carrara 7.

When I purchased 3D World Mag last year about this time for $17.00 and got Carrara 5 Pro in it. I installed it and went to DAZ and they issued me a Download Serial Number. Then I turned around and Upgraded to 6 Pro in April for only $67.97 and that is the advantage of purchasing the mag is that your upgrade will cost very little. I recently upgraded to 7 Pro for $79.97 and you just can't beat that kind of price for this Amazing software.

Yes there is a serial no in the mag on the page about installation.

I'm stoked about this! Carrara6 Pro has the ocean primitive, hair(grass) modeler, improved modeling, rendering and animation features. plus many other things the Standard ver. doesn't.  I've already got 3D Coat for painting and displacement modeling. I may be set until it's time to upgrade to ver.8.

I went to get my issue at Barnes and Noble in Chattanooga, TN.  The cover disc says it is just Carrara Pro 5 not 6.  Anyone know why?  I would really like to get Carrara Pro 6.  I already have 5.  Would love to know what is going on.

I just went to B&N and indeed it states Carrara Pro 5 as the version being given away.  So.....my question is it indeed 5 as stated on the cover or is it 6?  Anyone know for sure?  Thanks...

artbyphil posted Wed, 08 April 2009 at 1:09 PM

Thats strange. I got the April 2009 issue here in the UK and it definatley has version 6 pro on it. I've installed and been using it.  Theres a picture of the box on the disc cover.

Wonder if its diffrent in other countries. Sure its digital arts mag you saw and not computer arts or something. I know I've mixed them up before today as they all look very similar on the shelf.

If you have no sucess with that keep an eye out for another new mag thats out, 3D Artist. the first issue is out over here now. thats got it on as well.

50parsecs posted Wed, 08 April 2009 at 3:02 PM

I live in the upper left corner of the US and we still haven't gotten the April issue in at the local B&N. I'll keep my eyes open for it, and the first issue of 3D Artist. Thanks.

ShawnDriscoll posted Wed, 08 April 2009 at 3:55 PM

I'll be getting 3D Artist issue 1 instead.  It's a better mag than Digital Art.

You know, I think you are right.  It must have been Computer Arts magazine that is giving away Carrara Pro 5.  I'll keep my eye out for the Digital Arts or 3D Artist magazine.  I wonder if B&N is going to be carrying the new magazine?

Plutom posted Thu, 09 April 2009 at 9:33 AM

Some B&N stores don't carry Digital Arts, it depends on where the store is located--I asked the one in our city.

I'm hoping that 3D World will have it---in some issue.  You folks in GB will know first.  Jan

ShawnDriscoll posted Thu, 09 April 2009 at 2:50 PM

Digital Arts is not a big seller.  The B&N's near me (just found out) don't carry it anymore.  But in La Jolla there is a newstand at University Towne Center mall which still has plenty of Digital Arts from last month that has Carrara Pro 5 in it.  So I'm sure they will have the April issue with Carrara Pro 6 next week there (along with the premier issue of 3D Artist).  The newstand carries all kinds of mags from Europe that B&N doesn't shelf.

ShawnDriscoll posted Thu, 09 April 2009 at 6:51 PM

I just looked at the newstand and Carrara Pro 6 (Digital Arts April 2009) is on its shelf.  No 3D Artist yet.

Thank you ShwnDriscoll! I'm out the door in search after dinner. The B&N I go to usually carries that mag. Happy hunting to everyone who would like to get this.

InfoCentral posted Thu, 09 April 2009 at 8:08 PM

Maybe I'd better call around first before heading out the door in search of this magazine.

ShawnDriscoll posted Thu, 09 April 2009 at 11:35 PM

Looks like 3D Artist mag hits the US full on around April 24th.

I have some old mags laying around called DIGIT.  They were good mags.  I found out that they renamed themselves to Digital Art and that it's a lot less pages now.  I guess the term digital art is going the way that the term desktop publishing did.

Whoo-Hoo! I've been checking B&N almost every day, and the April issue of Digital Arts finally arrived on the shelves here. I have quite a few issues of the old Digit magazine here as well. One of the coolest apps they offered was ParticleIllusion 2.0SE, which I still use.

Just picked up my copy of DigitalArts last night at Boarders.  Installed Carrara Pro, shaders, and the models this morning.

I bought Painter 8 and still haven't had the chance to use it yet.  It is sort of like Carrara...not a lot of resource material to learn it.

old news now, but the MARCH issue of Digital Arts had Carrara 5 Pro..the APRIL issue has 6

does DAZ issue another serial or do they accept the mag serial to upgrade?

I have the Pro 6.2 and Daz does not issue any addition serial numbers other then the one in the magazine.   Usually, this means they won't recognize it for future upgrade pricing.  I got Carrara in 3D Magazine, installed and registered it, then proceeded to purchase the upgrade to Carrara 3.  I must not of been the only one because shorly after that they announced you were not eligable  for upgrade purchase with the free magazine version.  Glad I jumped on it when I did!

Back when Eovia owned Carrara they had a special for some plug-in package for $99.  I decided that was a decent deal but every time I clicked to purchase it nothing happened.  So I contacted the company about it.  They didn't know what I was talking about and directed me to their product manager ( I believe that was his title).  Well, he asked where I saw that at.  I directed him to the ad on his website.  He wrote back to me that indeed I correct about the ad but said it was an error and they would not honor the ad price.  He said that perhaps he might be able to give some sort of a discount off the retail price.  Never comitted to it and never gave me a price.  I was so pissed...

Last I remember Daz bought Carrara fro Eovia and Daz acquired this guy in the deal.

ShawnDriscoll posted Fri, 01 May 2009 at 1:42 AM

Both magazines give out the same serial number for the Carrara Pro 6.2.1 installer which cannot be registered with DAZ for any upgrade.  $18 (magazine price + tax) for Carrara Pro 6.2.1 full version.  What better price is there for it?

the question isn't the mag price, it's whether or not you can get the DAZ upgrade price to C7Pro.
It would seem to me that DAZ would by foolish to not allow upgrade. Money is money, especially in these times. They're not really out anything as I'm sure most that buy the mag version for cheap wouldn't buy C7 full price anyway.

Never happen especially since they just completed a whole rewrite of the program code starting from scratch.

Dave-So posted Fri, 01 May 2009 at 10:10 PM

would give them a great opportunity to release their last version prior to the rewrite on a mag.

Hmmm, I haven't messed with Lightwave, except to read some articles and tuts for it. Enough to know that I would jump at a deal like that. It might become another valuable tool in my kit.

InfoCentral posted Sat, 02 May 2009 at 9:31 AM

In the past NewTek has had competitive upgrades for Lightwave that were too good to pass on.  Quite a few from this forum got in on it several years ago.  That door has closed but I believe if your a Modo user you can still get it.  There are a few others but they are all in the high end price range, programs like Max etc.

DarwinsMishap posted Mon, 04 May 2009 at 11:52 AM

I bought Digital Art for the C6 Pro, and registered it on Daz with the same code; if they don't recognize that for the upgrad (IF I wanted it) why the heck did I bother?  Eh, oh well.  16 bucks is better than full price for the program-no complaints here.

Wonder if I can get a rebate on the C7Express I got earlier, then?  I'll have to find out.

Anyone know what the last version of Lightwave was that worked with a version of Vue xStream?

www.youtube.com/user/ShawnDriscollCG

InfoCentral posted Mon, 04 May 2009 at 8:18 PM

Try to purchase the upgrade and see if it will go through.

I'd upgrade but at this point it is cheaper for me to upgrade Shade and I am really considering do it.

The problem is deciding which app to continue updating.  Right now I have MotionBuilder, XSI Essentials, and Cinema 4D XL which are now a few versions behind as I never wanted to $pend the cash they were asking.  Keeping current are Modo, Lightwave, Silo, SketchUp Pro, and Life Forms.

ShawnDriscoll posted Mon, 04 May 2009 at 10:59 PM

With those apps, including the older Cinema 4D, I wouldn't bother with Shade anymore.  It must be really cheap for the upgrade and it reads files that you still use often?

InfoCentral posted Mon, 04 May 2009 at 11:31 PM

At the last moment I ran across the comparison chart for the 3 different versions.  That's when I found out that Shade only had OBJ for 3D import/export unless you purchase the Pro version which is a much as Lightwave.  That's when I decided to drop that idea.  Oh well, I think that the next version of Modo is just around the corner anyways...

Just started watching Mark's VTC tutorial on Carrara Pro 6 and then opened up the program.  Geeesh, what a difference in the interface form Carrara 3.  The reason I got Carrara in the first place was because the interface reminded me of the Poser interface a lot.  It doesn't look like Poser anymore...
