I am trying to create a scene where V3 is UNDER water. When applying my water material, it, doesn't look like she's UNDER water. I think I need to add some agitation or ripples, however every tutorial I found works well if your using SURFACE (say looking from the top of a bathtub down.) I added some fish and also am having a hard time lighting objects through the water, but this doesn't help. Any suggestions on lighting AND agitation? The concept is V3 is in a fish tank and someone is leaning against the tank looking at her so I don't want to pull the camera back too far to emphasize the fact that she UNDER water. Using V3 and P6. I have attached 2 copies, First is P4 render engine no ray trace Second is with Easy! water materials by Gabriel, with ray tracing water colored blue. The first is not clear enough to see any detailing on V3, the second is clear but doesn't really look like she submersed in water.
Thank you in Advance,
Viper

If you put a clear plane in front of her with a cloud or noise pattern in the refraction, that might give you something a littler closer to what you're looking for.

Thanx captain Jack , I know how to put a plane in front but dont know how to make it clear, please advise if you can

Put your plane in place, then with it selected, go to the Material Room. Make the diffuse color black, and set the transparency node to 100%. Plug something in to the refraction node that varies the refraction over the surface of the plane (a black and white cloud texture should do the trick). From there, play with those settings to adjust their strengths... variations in refraction looking through water will be subtle, so a little bit of refraction change will go a long way, but it should make a noticeable difference in the "underwater" look.

I'd suggest adding a sort of "caustic" gel to your light(s) - like a turbulence node or something,

flip your picture upside down and add your water effect. This puts you under water. Plugins like Flamingpears Flood plugin.
I even have a freeware program that has a very good lake water effect if anybody wants the link.

Well... if this is an outdoor scene then there should only be one light source from above. The surface disturbance should cause broken shawdows on the sea floor and character however the character should not be distorted. Lighting shafts should diverge from the point source, the sun, from above.
Keep posting. I'd like to see the results.

Wilber: Now that I thought about it, your right charcter SHOULD not be distorted. Please click the link provided. I found the effect I'm looking for. you can at the top of the render the water appears to 'wave' that's what I'm looking for.The great TrekkieGrrrrl: I am honored. I have caustic gels that can cast shadows onto the character that give a more submerded look, but I dont know where to attach them in the material nodes.
Geoegress: Does that plugin work in P6? If so, how? Good idea for flipping the water prop.

OK I see what you are trying to achieve. Add a simple plane above the scene, add turbulance to the displacment node etc.
That reference pic still does not give me the feeling that the subject is under water. The lightig is wrong...but maybe that's the effect wanted???

Have a look at the link - that might help. In that thread i show how to do fake caustic lighting. Look at the sub and you can see that it is lit like it is underwater. You haven't said if you want to show the surface or not as in the reference pick.

Also, if you're trying to convince the viewer that we are looking through glass, instead of BEING under/in the water with the swimmer, then you should do something about that.
Put a big square between the camera and the figure. Then you need to think about what you want to reflect in that square. I'd surround the whole scene with my environment sphere, and I'd set up some panoramic HDR photo of an interior on the environment sphere. Then I'd set up the square to reflect the environment.

My tank is 20 feet deep and my camera is about 6 feet from the glass. I set the depth cue from 6 to 50 feet. My depth cue color is RGB 40, 175, 220.
(I added a few creatures just for grins.)
