That's Yannek's work. If the skin is available at all (and I'm not sure it is) then it would be in the DAZ store, search for "-Yannek-".

Okay, so does that make sound business sense for Daz to constantly advertise something, by way of its zips, that no-one can ever obtain?
Why doesn't Daz clearly state "This character is not available"?

You should contact Yannek. Image credits state that he only used V4 base. Yannek is one of the top artists around, and it's very likely he could have made the girl just using personal dial spins using V4.
I don't think it's bad business at all to use images of what people made using their product, as their business is a lot more then just character packs.

In that case the image should either be in a gallery or at the very least clearly labelled as an artists work. Including the image as part of the commercial Daz installer suggests to me that it is a commercial product. That particular image is pretty heavily postworked, I don't think it's a good representative of DAZ|Studio in and of itself. It's a beautiful pic, just not a particularly ethical choice for the DAZ|Studio splash page banner. Not like Yannek is going to come to your house and postwork your D|S renders for you.

I appreciate people's comments that this image is a particular artst's work. I fear I'm going to have to create my own character using the dials, but the downside is I'm working entirely from memory of the person. It just annoys me that Yanek's character is so similar that it would save me a lot of work getting started on my figure's face, just needing a bit of tweaking.

I see your point, however, that particular view has never bothered me. I'm used to advertising just about everywhere showing products "Larger then life", or companies using high end outstanding results for advertising, rather then your average run of the mill user results.
If I shose to look at it the way you do, I'd be extremely pissed about Zbrush or MAX and similar software, because I can't create things with it that high enders whose work they use to advertise their software can do.
I agree, it is frustrating, but, I don't see it as 'their fault'. It's just frustrating wanting something I can't get, or have, or make or buy.

Surely a 10 second label is more 'potentially' profitable than just putting one's feet up and saying "Let them guess what it is!"
By the way, speaking as a model maker, creating the very best models doesn't mean they are going to sell like hot cakes. The more unique and fabulous the model, the more limited its application, not to mention prone to changes of fashion. I think it's the everyday things that are more repetitively saleable, and what's more, for the modeller the simple things are much easier to update or adapt into new models.

I got a reply from Daz. Apparently the original gallery image (but not the zip image) 'does' mention that this character uses V4 base. Daz think this character is an Elite add on, but can't rmember which one. However, having now found the entire image I can create my own custom character with the morph dials and Elite textures.
Thank you everyone here for your most helpful answers. I must say that Yannek is a superb character artist and a credit to the medium. I've rarely seen such realism in a character creation and render, but that's probably due to my lack of browsing in the galleries. I don't intend to copy Yannek's character as such, just have my own custom character for personal use as the inspiration for a story.

While I agree, it also asks the question of "what is a custom light"? I use a specific lightset on almost all my "candlelit, indoor" images, it's the Albany Night HDRI light that comes with Poser 7. So it's in a way a standard light set, just not the one Poser loads with. And no one in their right mind would use Poser's default lights for a promo image (at least I doubt it)
I usually label my promo pictures with "serving suggestion" - partly for the fun of it and partly because.. well.. not everything on the picture is likely to be included. When I buy a pack of noodle soup I don't excpet real giant prawns and fresh vegetables and such to be included either - even if it's on the picture ;)
I do not think that heavy postwork has anything to do on a promotional picture though. It's decieving and the customers may buy what they think is (for instance) a flawless "model-powdered" texture, only to find out that the flawlessness was all Photoshopped.
Of course a merchant will strive to make his or her product look the best possible, some have specialized artists to make their renders (I know my own promos usually suck) - and I see no harm in that, as long as it is stated that the image is postworked. For my own promos I try to have both "no postwork" pictures of the product, and one where I show the potential of the thing in question. As long as people are aware that "the product will not look like this when loaded in a default Poser with the default render settings" - it's nothing different from any frozen pizza. What you see is not what you get - but what you may make it into with a little extra ;)

This is a good base set - IBL Classic, I aslo like the IBL Darks as well. Here at Rendo, LIGHT is a nice set with variety, !CorVas! SoftLights isn't bad either, plus any of the sets by SaintFox
