I discovered L3DT today when reading Luke Ahearn's latest book on Photoshop game textures, in which he recommends this program. I was surprised on searching to see that it has only been mentioned, in passing, just three times in this forum. I think it really deserves more attention from the Vue community.Basically, L3DT is a heightfield generator like GeoControl. It's aimed at the game industry but the maps it generates are perfectly usable in Vue. The standard edition is free, and can generate maps up to 2048x2048; if you want larger maps, the pro version (only $35 for independent users as opposed to organisations) can generate maps up to 131,072 x 131,072(!) and can also export terrain texture maps.
Check it out, it's worth a look. Ignore the gallery, which isn't always that inspiring as most of the renders are done in a game engine, but with some good ones in Terragen, and try it out in Vue. You'll need to read the docs for how to export heightfields in .bmp or .png format.
