Starlet, I noticed a blurb at the bottom of the page mentioning that the boxed version (without printed manual) will be available in one to two weeks.
Though I make frequent use of PDF-format manuals, I would still like a printed copy. Will there be a purchase option for obsolete fossils like myself?

Poser 8 officially launches tomorrow, emails will start to head out around 3am Pacific time, I believe the press release goes around 5am or 6am (total guess), Siggraph opens at 10am Central (8am Pacific) - so we're just trying to get out ahead of them - you guys don't let anything slip under the radar!
Unfortunately, I don't know any details about manuals or other stuff - I just know it's for sale in Content Paradise - that's my piece! I'm sure you'll all get most of your answers in the emails that are going out, in a few hours, (which take a few hours to send through) and as the rest of the pieces fall in place tomorrow. Us e-commerce people were just deciding that we'd rather turn on before bed than get up in the wee hours of the morning to support all the mailings!
I strongly urge you to contact customer service for any questions you may have regarding any of the questions you posted here, but after the official Poser 8 launch tomorrow. (Poser Pro owners will have more information at that time.)

I'm sorry, didn't mean to start anything. The coupon I got was from Content Paradise last month. They had a treasure chest thingy and I won a 25% discount coupon which I could redeem on ANY item as long as it was before Aug. 31. When I bought the Poser 6 upgrade from Curious Labs, it just came from Ireland. Just want to know whether SM had a similar shipping structure or to expect a big shipping and tax bill!
Before anyone mentions the download version, the broadband in my area is painfully slow, it still travels through those old copper wires. No cable, fibre optics etc unfortunately!

I bought the boxed version of Poser Pro from Smith Micro and it was shipped from the USA by Fedex. As far as I can remember shipping costs were included. But I certainly didn't have any HM Customs duty or taxes to pay. Delivery was pretty swift as well.
Ref broadband over 'those old copper wires' check out Be Unlimited. I get 2 MB (Mega Bytes) per second down a standard BT phone line.

I got a letter saying that they were supposed to be upgrading my local exchange within the next 30 days and that it could improve my broadband speed. I then got an email saying that they were supposed to be working on it last week. Checked last night and doesn't seem to have made any difference at all. In fact it's now so slow that the number is higher but the units after it are lower. Damn school holidays! Kids go out and play, get some fresh air! I had 3 failures downloading the main Poser 8 file, but got it eventually. I am still downloading the Poser 8 content and Legacy content.
I read.. in my purchase confirmation that...
Download link - You ordered 1 copy of this software. You are authorized to download the software using the link below 1 time to fulfill your order.
But... it allowed me the 3 attempts.
I also payed the extra $8.68 for the extended download service (2 years) but I don't think that was what allowed me the 3 download attempts as it says in my confirmation e-mail that to use that service, Smith Micro has to be contacted in order to reset a new download link.

Legacy Content is just that, items from previous versions of Poser. I do not know of any additions to the Legacy Content, so if you already have the older versions of Poser, you only need the new content and Program. Linking to the old Runtimes as External Runtimes in the new Library is very easy and allows you access to all your content already installed.

As with all past versions of Poser, Poser 8 is its own Program. The Upgrade is Pricing only. You never want to install it over an older version of Poser (you can install it on the same system)
I have Poser 5 through Poser 8 on several of my systems and use all of them through out the day usually (Can not have two different versions running on the same machine at the same time, but you can shut down Poser 7 and go to Poser 8 or Poser Pro.)

As you do not have Poser Pro (released last year) you should enter the Poser 6 serial number.
Pro Pack is, as manoloz said, not related to Poser Pro, so you won't be eligible for the Poser Pro to Poser 8 upgrade.

my opinion on poser 8.
not so bad.
it renders faster. i am a little lost and confused because of the new library. but i will get used to.
when i am in the material room it is slower then in poser pro and poser 7.
the IDL is intresting. i dont know if i have a slow computer but a simple box and sphere renders 1 minute and 5 seconds. i think this is pretty long for a render without shadows. but its new and i guess you will fix it.
i can see artifacts but it was said that you will fix it until SP1. i am happy for that.
there is tons of stuff that you get with poser 8. tons. so much that i am spending hours to test it all. tons of stuff.
one thing that i noticed. poser 8 crashed 2 times when i was in the material room. i dont know if i am the only one. but it crashed.
ice-boy posted Fri, 14 August 2009 at 9:05 AM
ok BB i think i found my first problem with tone mapping.
it makes the background images brighter. for example the reflection map from the ENsphere.
so i made tests. if i plug something in the ambient channel or alt-diffuse then the tone mapping changes it.
if we can not change this then this is a big problem.
