I suggest you are far better off using Vertex Modelling in Carrara.
Better still Hexagon if you have it.
You should be able to use these tutes ideas in Carrara though.

If you have Carrara recent versions, the Carrara Vertex Room workings have some similarities to Hexagon so you should be able to follow the Hexagon bike making tute in Carrara.

didna sparrowhawke have a plug-in for gears? or was that eric?
trying to do a gear in spline mod never worked for me unless using only corner-points in the ai file - no beziers.

Carrara is a little finicky about complex compound paths from AI. The most predictable way I've found is by using Illustrator's Intersect function and then delete the unwanted shapes leaving the final compound. (This may require several operations) For some reason, the voids are respected when using this method instead of the simple "compound" option.

Brian this is one of the rare times when the spline modeler can get you some pretty complex shapes without too much work - if you already have your paths set up in Illy or Draw.
Sort of like nurbs modeling in MOI or Rhino, but you can push it to far and Carrara will choke.

Hi Wayne
Horses for cources.
I never have been able to mentally gel with the Spline Modeller---can you guess how many times I have tried since Carrara2!!!!
(Was it too late at 72(2002) to start using a computer perhaps!)
Now, MoI on the other hand, has been like taking a duck to water.
(And, once, I was the greatest Hexagon fan!)
