I was just looking at some of the new images that were released for FFXIV on friday and I was really impressed with some of the texture mapping that square was able to do on some of those monsters and terrains.
Some of the monster models don't look high poly, they aren't using any displacement mapping, and the lighting could probably a little tweaking, but it looks like games are really starting to look very well done at least in one respect. The details on the cactus thing and the tentacle monster really caught my eye.

They are using normal mapping instead of displacement mapping, which Poser 7 pro and poser 8 can also do.
Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

Actually most current and next gen games use what is called Parallax Mapping
Dunno if it's doable in poser though.
