This is just a suggestion, wish, or advise to those who like to post large images. Sometimes I see a nice picture and want to enlarge it (if that option is provided), but often I find the enlarged version full of digital artifacts – not so pretty. And it's sad also, because the picture itself is often beautiful, and I wanted to see more details and not those ugly artifacts.

I would advise to be more careful with compression – the dimensions of the image doesn't have to be enormous, but the compression shouldn't pass that point when the artifacts start to show.

What do you think? Do you agree?

I guess I thought, if somebody doesn't know how to do quality image compression – can ask questions here, and I am sure, other people can reply with suggestions how to do it in different programs. Or provide links to tutorials on the web.

A lot of this depends on what size you upload, what program you use and how much you compress it.

I would rather see a smaller version with less compression.

I usually keep my images here to no great than 1000 pixels. Truthfully I have been considering going to 800 pixels.

Generally in photoshop I  stay at quality of 7 or higher..

I do "Fit Image" on Photoshop at 800 x 600 , and save at 8 level of quality.

My suggestion would be to keep the compression as HIGH as you can without showing obvious artifacting at 800X600.
Lowering the JPG compression produces a better quality image for those intent on stealing your image.

When the "zoom" is clicked to bring on the larger version of the image, aren't we getting what was uploaded in the first place(with or without artifacts)? I am not compressing to gallery or forum page display size since Renderosity does that.    

I don't see too many images when "zoomed" with dreadful artifacts but a few are there and yes, that ruins it for viewing.

Gradient makes sense and much larger than 800 x600 or so starts to demand scrolling which is annoying in trying to see the whole image at once.
