You know I never really cared for the name Poser. With all the versions, now up to 8 or so, would there be a better name for our favourite program in 2010.
I just think it sounds kind of "lurking" to me.
What do think a better name would be?

PoseArt? PoseArtist? Yeah, Poser sounds kinda lame... Like the Ford Probe. Oy! I drive a Mazada Protégé*...* *protégé of what? A better car?

Several come immediately to mind, though none are repeatable in polite company.

I think the name is fitting.
That's really the only stand-out strength of the program - unmatched buy any other,
posing figures.
But if I HAD to pick another name
I'd say -
IHEARTGIANTBOOBS*

Unfortunately, regardless of whether there's a better possible name for Poser, the name won't be changing any time soon.
Why? Because it's established, and people know the name. Good or ill, there's a history to the name, and that history is part of what makes people buy a new version, and makes it easier to market the new version.
Smith Micro (and the previous 3 owners) are banking on people being aware of a program called "Poser", what it can do, and roughly how it works, and base their advertising on that for their new versions.
If they renamed the program, they'd have to spend more on marketing, to show people more of how the program works, unless they really stressed the fact that it's just a renamed Poser. And I imagine that the latter option would still anger a fair number of people, particularly those who feel there is nothing wrong with the name, and it didn't need changing.

Actually, weren't there four companies prior to Smith Micro? eFrontier, I think, was a spin-off of Curious Labs but the overseas office was a separate company or something like that.
Fractal Designs (Poser 1-2)
MetaCreations (Poser 3-4)
Curious Labs (Poser 4 Pro Pack - 6)
eFrontier (6-7)
I started with Poser 2 and I thought there was actually another company prior to Fractal Design that had it, but I could be wrong on that one since I never had the first version. Fractal Design also put out that Paint program that came in a paint can. It was later bundled with either Poser or another MetaCreations product.
Poser 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Pro 2014, 11, 11 Pro

yup.... there were a lot of hands tooling and retooling this product.... but the name remanes the same.... sadly Poser.

Changing its name won't keep lazy people from making ugly, shadowless renders of default Vicki/Aiko staring into space while striking a physically impossible, yet aesthetically unappealing pose, and then uploading said renders to every 3d gallery on the net :-P

Not to derail the thread, but I thought this was largely a myth, or at least just newbies who were starting out. But no, having perused a few galleries, not just rendo, I have come to realise that there are an insane amount of people who don't use shadows. Wtf! There's also a metric butt ton of people who render a figure, slap it onto a fuzzy background pic with no regard to the inevitable jaggies around said figure and proudly pronounce it art. shakes head in bemusement
I think the name's fine, besides, if they called it something else it would probably confuse me. Doesn't take much to confuse me lol
aeilkema posted Thu, 05 November 2009 at 6:39 AM
Couldn't agree more with you, Greebo. You know what baffles me the most? Why does someone spent so much money on a hobby and then creates such terrible renders, instead of trying to make the most use of what Poser offers. I would know much better things to do with my money. It's no wonder Poser has a bad name in the 3D world....
As for a new name, I don't have a problem with the name Poser, but it doesn't reflect what Poser is and can do these days. It has outgrown the name Poser. If I would rename it, I would call it Posable 3D
At least I think Poser is still a much better name then what DAZ came up with for their application...... DAZ Studio, who in the world ever choose such an uninspiring name? I know, it's marketing, DAZ needs to be in the name, otherwise the whole content pushing concept fails, but DAZ Studio is kind of a lame name.
Artwork and 3DToons items, create the perfect place for you toon and other figures!

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(
Food for thought.....
