I'm including a copy of my latest work in progress. As you can see, the doghouse has no texture to it. I made it in Wings3d and imported it and gave it a wood-like texture but the texture is not showing up on the doghouse. Now adding textures seem to work when I use one of the DazStudio's own primitives - but not when I import an object of my own.My 2nd question is how would I be able to add the doghouse as part of the contents that show up on the side of Daz Studio so that I won't have to keep importing it everytime that I want to use it?
I'm still quite learning Daz Studio and I have learned many new things about it but the "surface" thing has me stumped - I tried adjusting the bump settings in the surface tabs but still the wood-like texture is not showing up.

Hi Rose.
To add textures to a model you have to define UV Map. A UV Map is a 2D map of the 3D surface so that then you can paint a 2D image and Studio/Poser/Carrara/Blener etc. will be able to know on what part of the surface the pixels from the texture go. Do some search on the web and get some books about 3D modeling an texturing. Wings or Blender will be able to do the UV Mapping and texturing.
To add content to Studio you need to create a CR2 file. There are scripts for doing that. Basically yuou import your UV-Mapped .OBJ file inside Studio, add the textures via the Surface tab and the export the object as a CR2 file. Add all the files to a Runtime directory structure, include that Runtime in the list of directories scanned by Studio and you're all set.

You don't need to create a .cr2 -- just save the doghouse as a DAZ scene in a D|S-format content folder (NOT under Runtime).

Thank you for responding - Wow, what an answer! Now I do have Wings3d (and Blender too by the way but haven't got the "gist" of Blender yet - LOL!) So I will have to try it.

BTW - I am downloading a program called UV Mapper - hopefully that will help too!

As you can see the doghouse now has a surface added to it as well as the grass too!
Following everyone's advice I used UV Mapper to map the doghouse object and then applied the surface texture that I wanted (wood).
In the past I just assumed that since I was able to add textures using both Bryce and Vue that I could do that using DazStudio as well but found out that I was wrong!
I'm still working on that other part about adding the doghouse.obj as a cr2 file.
