I am getting an “insufficient disk space to render at the present resolution,” message, it being a mere default 640, no anti alias, even in same window, and with single figures or ordinary scenes that have been rendered at much higher resolutions in the past. Rebooting doesn’t help. What on earth?

Have you looked at your free disk space? Sometimes errors are, um, factual.
Not saying you're really out of space, but since you didn't actually say you verified how much available disk space you have, well....
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

OK, got it! I did a disk clean up and that solved it. Many thanks.

Poser has always liked to have huge chunks of hard drive space to lay everything out while rendering, if your drive is geting a bit full or if the drive is wildly fragmented Poser is going to complain, if your a defrag obsessed ocd case like me you'll defrag once a week, of course once a month should be good enough to keep Poser happy. :D

Appreciate it! I'll be a defrag fanatic.

there was a similar problem back in the day when it couldn't find textures in the correct place...but I'm sure that's been solved by now...

Didn't that bring up the out of memory error?
