They have to be close enough together to "melt".
Make sure they aren't just spheres. (yes...I have done this, lol)

LOL! Yes! That's the FIRST thing I did was to make sure that they were, in fact, metaballs! Funny you should mention it as I have done that, too. :-D
No, I have them close enough. It seems to be something involving groups of them. I can get a small number to work together, but when I begin to diversify the shape is when it starts NOT "melting" together...

Oh, yes...forgot to mention that.
Grouping Metaballs can have adverse affects. (can you say bug fix please?)
I have noticed in the past when I would group positive and negative metaballs together, sometimes the boolean affect is canceled until I ungroup them.
I can only assume that something similar is happening to you.
I know. Lame.

Yeah... That's about the way it does things... Hopefully the new Bryce 7 will not have this problem.
So, in your experience, grouping metaballs blows their boolean values out, including the "blending" they do? That's a real bummer. Very hard to not group them when making an object, especially one that's "complicated"...

What I have run into is the creation of groups within groups will cancel out my negative metaballs. I HAVE to create my metaball object with absolutely no grouping, except at the end, where I can group them all as one single group, and all will be fine.
Meaning; make a handful of regular metaballs, then make two negative metaballs, now group only the two negative metaballs together and the boolean affect will be nullified.

Have you tried linking them instead of grouping? I don't know if it will work, but you could try.
Linking? Have never tried it. I guess I should read the Bryce manual...
However! I am uploading an image I have been trying to get together using metaballs. I am anxious for some feedback to see how well I did...

Hey! A question about metaballs:
I made an object, using metaballs, but when I got done arranging them, I noticed they didn't "melt together", but stayed looking like a group of spheres.
Did I do something wrong? I've used them before and had no issues (except the negative thing). But, now they are not working together....
