Well since my first ever 3D proggy was Bryce I've downloaded it but will wait till tomorrow to take a look.

I haven't used it in such a long time I've probably forgotten how!    I do hope they've changed the material lab.  I hated that......

Never used it, started with Vue 4 Esprit!
How does it compare with Vue now, is it catching up, going to pass it do you think??

Painted Ecosystems: until they add instancing you quickly hit memory limits (it is still 32 bit) so the jury is still out.

Trees: this version can export trees as meshes. I have tried the export and the result is good, even a low quality levels; for sure, my first trials with B7 tree exports have been better than the best results I could get out of Vue plants exports. Needless to add that B7 Tree lab is still nothing compared to C7 vegetation engine, but for sure it is roughly on pair with Arbaro (and simpler).

Not bad, not bad at all (especially for Bryce price tags).

Bye...

P.S. it isn't strange that applications are improving: it is what they ALL HAVE to do (even 4-digits big boys) if they want to survive the thing you see in action here (insert the most evil grin and laughter you can imagine...)

I saw this and was considering getting bryce 6 at half price just to have it, but then I looked at the example pictures they where displaying with it..

not tryign to start a mud slinging match here or be a ponce, since I have no idea about bryce, but is that really a selling point?

P.S. welcome back alex.

hello pricing banded bryce.

Rich_Potter: If you are talking about the render then I agree they could probably use something a little more sophisticated. The UI however IS a selling point. It is very very easy to use. Using Director view, it is very easy to move around your scene and zoom in and out. No, it is not what some call a traditional 4 view screen but swapping views is simple.

I would however ask how you managed to get that ratio?
As for creating things in Bryce you guys might checkout The Flying Scotsman Project (blatent self-promo) at the top of the Bryce Forum.;-) Modelling is deceptively easy in Bryce.

Well I've installed it and had a look.  The documentation is for 6 not 7.  Couldn't find anything on instancing.

The trees are still the same as I rememeber from when I used it.  I thought I'd seen something over at the DAZ forum on 'vegetation lab' but only found the miserably horrid tree lab

I imported a tree from Onyx but couldn't find where to separately edit the leaves from the trunk and it crashed when I tried to load the edit menu so at this moment in time I think my thoughts on Bryce 7 are "I'm underwhelmed"

Now this is only a personal opinion and as it's been so long since I used it (even if it was my first app and I did ALL the early LVS classes) I've really forgotten how to use it so don't anyone just take my word for it (as if you would anyway 😉)

bryster, this is an example from the site, nothign ive done :P

I have to agree, the buttons look nice, but as for how it works Ive never tried it, just thought the promo shots where funny :)

Ive kinda gotten used to the arcane controls of lightwave now, hold down two buttons and move the mouse while chanting in latin to zoom, these simple one click zoom and rotate things confuse and alarm me :D

are you trying to imply you're mafiosa? I didnt realise that they "trolled" forums posting links to blender, and im fairly sure that if they did films like the godfather would never have made it.

Haha! That's the best I've heard this month!

I was still entitled to B7 so I downloaded it, installed it and gave it a spin. There are some improvements but overal I must say I was not impressed.

There's only one thing in Bryce that I wish Vue had: the spray render. That's really clever and useful.

alexcoppo posted Sat, 16 January 2010 at 5:05 PM

To make things clear so that nobody has misunderstanding, I was offended by the idea that somebody thinks that I am such a fickle that 6 months are enough to make me swallow up offences. I assumed that pointing out my heritage would be enough, but apparently this suggestion was too subtle for the average audience.

In mid 1970's (right, we are talking about 35 years ago) I had serious problems at school. I was a textbook example of nerd (eyeglasses, clumsy, with marks always in the upper 10% range of the class) and therefore all the lowlives with whom I had to spend 4 hours per day went after me. In 1997 (13 years ago, more than 20 years after the events) I, by chance, met one of my tormentors. This bloody bitch recognized me and had the impudence of telling me "hi, I'm Ginetta, do you remember me?" Yes, I DID remember her. It would have been a perfect occasion to tell her what I thought of her, but, unfortunately, she was a public official and there were people (read potential witnesses) nearby so all I could do was to send her a stare full of hate, not willing to get into legal troubles. After 13 years, I still feel all the rage in not being able to vent all my despise for her.

So you are expecting me to forget and forgive just after 6 months? Sorry, but even 35 years are not enough for me.

Going back to 3D, the new Blender interface makes it usable and this cannot but improve its penetration in the professional/studios market, harming sales of other programs (Vue Infinite included). In addition, Blender is also forcing firms like DAZ to add features that they could have not developed like Bryce 7 painted ecosystems and instancing, something which cannot but affect negatively E-On sales in the hobbyist market segment. Mine was just some evil gloating w.r.t. E-On financial outlook, nothing else.

Am I interested in whom you wake up with? no. Am I interested in what you wake up with? neither. Am I interested in whether you do wake up at all? even less.

in the best Dragnet tradition, here are some info about some of my tormentors:

  1. one got into crime. His second-to-last mistake was to team up with a multiple killer. His last one was to quarrel with him for the loot. Hogtied. Dead.
  2. another one got into drugs. Overdose. As above.
  3. a third was (the best friend of the above mentioned bitch) became a drug addicted prostitute. I know nothing more of her, but AFAIK drug addicted whores don't last long.

Bryce 3D was the first CG software I ever used. I loved it and have lots of good memories about building scenes and boolean models. Eventually the Bryce look became tiresome. (I can recognize a Bryce render instantly unless it is black and white and limited to a few objects). Vue seemed to be where the real advancements were happening so I jumped ship. When ecosystems were invented (and eventually made usable) Vue's superiority over Bryce was exponential. Lots of irritation along the way though.

Daz needs to replace that 'User Interface and Completed Render' image. I was considering upgrading Bryce until that picture reminded me of the badness. Bryce is obsolete and I don't think Daz has what it takes to make it anything more than a platform for their content.

Paloth, I have to disagree. Bryce is far from obsolete. It is merely catching up after many years in the doldrums.

I should add that I wish Bryce well and hope that Daz comes through and makes it truly competitive as a landscape creation program. I didn't see anything concerning improvements to the sky editor in the initial list of features, so I'm less than optimistic about the priorities. There is scarcely anything Bryce needs more than a revamped sky editor.

Of course, you don't need realistic, volumetric skies if you're just rendering Daz people inside of Daz sets, but I thought we had enough platforms for that sort of thing already.

My earliest modeling experiments were in Bryce 3D, which must have been before Windows 98 was released. There were always primitives and booleans. There are metaballs in 5.5, my latest Bryce installation. I guess people can build with these sorts of things in Vue as well.

At this point I have Lightwave 9.6, Modo 401, Amapi Pro 7.52, Carrara 7 Pro, Wings, Hexagon, Zbrush 3.5 and the beta of Blender with the slightly-less-maddening interface. (I've even learned to use a few of these modelers.) I guess that's where I've been, not counting the 3d texture and 2D paint programs, Poser and Vue.

Anyone know how long the serial number is good for on this beta version? I ask because I've created scene I like, and since it can only be saved as a .BR7 I want to make sure I can open it if needed in the near future.

It might be a while before real bryce 7 is available.

Bryce was my first 3D rendering app ever, i got Bryce 4 quite cheap in around 2000 and although i liked the "ease of use"  i somehow abandoned it after a while.

Now like 10 years later I am a bit surprised that it still looks and feels how i "left" it. There are probably a million new features "under the hood", but on my first few clicks in it I still have the feeling i did something wrong and accidentially installed my old version.

maybe it's really just too long ago and my mind is playing tricks on me, but only difference that was "obvious" for me was the tree button (Which is quite neat imho!).

I think editing of terrains also became a bit better (I at least seem to recall it was "worse" in version 4), but my terrains still look quite crappy, i think i just lack the talent or practice. If i get anything done that doesn't look like a 5 yo made it imma post a pic in the gallery tomorrow.

I'm not really like "over excited" about the Version, but it feels a bit like a time travel, so I am still glad i get to play with it.
