I can't believe this has not come up before, but I've searched and can't find any relevant threads... so here goes...
Body hair... as in what a guy has on his chest, forearms, thighs, calves and of course, his pubes. How do the rest of you deal with it? I'm only aware of a few texture sets that really have any to speak of, and some of them (insanely) put hair on the chest, but none on the arms and legs.
I'm aware of Jepe's Hairy for (fill in the character) I own these sets. The issue with them is, they require a transparent conforming figure to attach themselves to, and even in the case of M4 (where you actually load a second copy of M4 and conform him to the original!) there are morphs and poses that just DON'T WORK.
So here's the question: How do you add hair to an existing skin map? And please... don't give me the fool's answer of "What Photoshop." I'm THAT smart! :) What I need is to know how to go about creating the hairs. Is there a set of brushes for photoshop that can be bought? Once you have them, how do you install them? How do you apply the hair to the texture? How do you keep from getting too much? Those who've suffered with my questions before know I need you to keep it simple.
Can anyone help?

there are some body hair brushes for sale in the marketplace , and some free ones , just google brush body hair. You paint in layers until you like the look. You may be able to layer jepes texture onto the skin texture

Instructions?

There's a lot more involved, but here are the basics: go into the hair room and click "New Growth Group" and name it, let's say, chest_hair. Now with your figures chest selected (still in Hair Room) click on "edit growth group" which will bring up the group editor menu and make your figure look darker. Then click on the little box with a + on the top )probably already selected) and drag it over the area you want the hair to be. It's a box shape, so you might have to do several smaller ones to get the shape they way you want. Then close the group editor and click "grow guide hairs". you'll need to adjust the length, etc. but that is the basics of growing hair in Poser.

In Poser, with a blender node, in the Advanced Material Room, one can uses Jepe's body hair masks to add body and face hair to any M4 texture. This does NOT require an extra figure.
The same method can be used to add eyebrows to faces without them.

I put bodyhair on a displacement map.
Takes some adjusting to get it right but it works.
just pay atention when using dynamic clothing.
Clothing is calculated on a nude obj, and the displacement map can come out of that during rendering, the time the map is aplied.
(not a nice view)
So adjust the calculation to have a little room between body and clothing.

If you're still looking for texture-mapped options, umblefugly has a couple brush sets in the MP that work great. I have both of them.Sitemail | Freestuff | Craftythings | Youtube|

Jenx,
This looks like exactly what I'm looking for. One question: Can Photoshop brushes be used in The Gimp?
BTW.. thanks to all who have responded! Lots of ideas!

I think they can, according to this link at gimp tutorials :) I have photoshop, so the only time I use GIMP is when I'm dorking around in Linux.Sitemail | Freestuff | Craftythings | Youtube|

Very easy and took about a minute to render.
IF you are that interested I could do you a quick tute.
But only if you are still interested. :)

How long did i take to set up the hairs?
basicwiz posted Fri, 05 February 2010 at 12:00 AM
Coltrace, Thanks for the offer, but this is not at all what I'm looking for. I want to make my male textures more male, not totally hairy. The hair room seems to over-do it. If I set it for just a prinkle, I don't get enough for effect. If I set enough, then I get clumps and rows and have to make the hairs too long to make them behave.
Just put the hair on a leg that a real guy would have. That's what I'm after.

Coltrace tutorial is easy.
Hairs can grow on any mesh, not only skullcap.
Go to hair room and select hair groups on chest, collars, arms etc.
For unimesh figures I use "David Hairy" transparency maps.

In PS I've modified maps reducing hairs number. For example remove all hairs on the chest painting it black.
Later I use it as a blending map. I blend texture with solid black colour.

I know that hair can be used on any map. I just cannot make it look good.

I think because you use low poly figure. Number of hairs depends on number of polygons.
Am I right? Do you try growth on low poly mesh?
bantha posted Sat, 06 February 2010 at 5:23 PM
I don't think that Mike 4 is really a low poly mesh.
