iS THERE A GOOD REASON WHY WE SHOULD USE THE WATER PLAIN INSTEAD OF JUST ADDING A WATER MAT TO THE GROUND PLAIN?

i use water mats on ground terrains for good wave shapes

an infinite plain is an infinite plain.....the ground, water, or sky are just preloaded for your convenience.

You can use whichever suits your needs at the time. Here are two examples from my gallery. The top piece “Homeward Bound” uses a hilly terrain mesh with a tweaked water mat as texture giving it that swollen, rough and rolling seas effect. The bottom (“Flooded Terraformer”) uses a water plain with a tweaked Caribbean Resort preset mat to give a more subdued effect. The plains are quick use, quick start presets for the user’s convenience but can be modified as I did for more detail.
