Bump maps only look right from the front. Is there a way in the texture editor to do displacement maps?

IO4 posted Sun, 07 March 2010 at 8:04 AM

I'm not sure what you mean that maps only look right from the front. Perhaps you could upload an image for us to see the problem. Bryce doesn't do displacement maps like some other apps. You can create your own bump maps and load them in the texture editor. You can also switch the texture mapping mode from the drop down list in the materials lab to suit the object better.

i'm sorry i dont have a connection at home so I'll have to wait until next weekend before i can upload an image. Let me give an example of what I mean. If i put a bump map on a box the bump will show on the front of the box, but the sides of the box come out smooth. Beeing norwegian I hope I have been able to explain this in english.  I know how to create a texture.

Hmm - that doesn't sound right, and it's not something I've experienced. The bump should show all over the object - try changing the texture mapping mode or increasing the bump value. That's the only things I can think of at the moment. There's no reason why it shouldn't show all over.  The only time it won't is if you have the texture mapping mode set to object side, top or front (see image), or if the lighting isn't right.  Perhaps someone else may have some ideas.

i'll try to post an example next week end. thank you for your answer

You can make some displacement in the texture editor using the editor..  I chose the image of the moon that's there as a default..  As you can see from  image One..  Click on "copy"-- on the original image--  then click on paste, -- middle blank space---  you'll get a pop-up asking if you want to delete.. say YES...

Image TWO.. is what you get as a result...

click the check mark to get back to the Materials Lab....

In the Materials Lab..  look at the preview texture palette you'll see three images these are color, value and bump... Have the "bump" selected as you can see yellow arrow points to it...  The last Image is the moon...  with displacement....

Hope this very quick tut helps out...

Displacement is a tool that actually tessellates the geometric surface itself, not merely drawing an impressions as with bump. Displacement actually add real polygons to a surface normal.

That said, Bryce does not have displacement abilities, not yet anyway. Let us see what hap;pens with Bryce 7. seems they are getting a lot of things just right with the new Beta!

Basically, a bump map interacts with light sources to paint a picture of a shadow on a surface, thus giving the illusion of bumpiness.  Depending on the angle of the surface and the light source(s),  the shadow pictures can become inaccurate.  For instance, on Poser figures, it's cool to use a displacement map to subtly  simulate veins on the surface of the skin.  The mesh is actually pulled by a displacement map.  But use that same map as a bump map in Bryce and one side of the figure will have veins, but the other side will probably have a negative effect and it'll look like someone gouged out little trenches in their skin!  You can work around this problem somewhat by reversing the value of the bump on the side that's incorrect, but again, you're just playing with artificial shadows.
Displacement is probably the number one thing on my wish list for Bryce.  I heard from someone, unofficially, that Bryce 7 will eventually have displacement.

Thanks for all the answers. I really hope they bring didplacement to B7. Bump doesnt allways work

Someone did this in the Terrain editor,,,  it is a displacement....

It is Tom an a 2d scale if you will, true displacement actually alters the shape of the object here's a link to what I mean. http://www.evermotion.org/tutorials/show/7937/fryrender-1-8-beta-review

That's a whole different level of displacement....  thanks for link...

Here is the displacement in the new beta....  it can not match the Fryrender engine... but it is better than what we had... this was doen with a Bryce cylinder

they are working on it. thankfully  right now its only a couple of the primitives and a few other objects wich will accept it. and as with everything in the current beta displacemnt oftent crashes bryce without warning even.
