Is there a remap to use v4 textures on v3 out there? I've been looking all day, but my google-fu is weak in this regard. I've tried using texture converter 2, but the results are, frankly, horrible, even after liberal application of my moderate photoshop skills.

the only one i've seen that could possibly help you is the universal texture converter over at daz3d

I am rather surprized that you obtained poor results with TC2 using V4 to V3.  I would double check your V4 textures in the Material Room.  Chances are that there may be shader nodes involved with the V4 textures that you are not applying to V3
