turn on the Depth of Field marker in show guides - this will be your focal plane.
select the camera, there you'll see a dial that moves the Marker to/from the camera.
set Depth of Field on render options.
done!

You need to use the "focus distance guide" from the "display" menu (under "guides"). Then select the camera and play with the focus_Distance parameter.
Using a z-depth render to post work is probably better as that gives you more control.

Also be aware of your aperture f-stop value on your camera. The higher the value, the greater the depth of field; the lower the value, the shallower your depth of field. Also, if you use DoF in your render, increase your pixel samples to 10 or greater or your shadows will appear very grainy. However, this will increase your render time significantly.
