I don't know you, but I am very sorry about your health problems. Keep your head up and don't let it beat you. Sounds like everyone here cares a lot about you so stay positive and allow the best wishes of all these people carry you through the darkest moments to what will inevitably be the light at the end of the tunnel.

Acadia, this may sound weird, but it's good to know that the type of cancer you have has such a high survival rate!!  We're pulling for you, Acadia, and I'm sure you'll get through it :)

Just an update

I'm starting to get my head wrapped around this whole thing and finding some silver linings :)  And I even felt like going out this past week so a friend and I went out to celebrate her new job.

Jen, I know the odds are definitely in my favour, but hearing  the word "cancer" in a sentence with your name in it, puts a whole different spin on it.

Anyway, I got the paperwork at work for my time off all done.  Initially I was facing 6 weeks unpaid leave because when I moved to my new job at the end of November last year, I lost all of my accumulated sick leave from my other job.

However, Human Resources and PayRoll sat down with me and they are going to play around with the coding so that I actually will get 1 extra full time pay cheque and will only have 4 weeks unpaid leave.

The last week of my medical leave is supposed to be a week that I'm on vacation.  Instead of trying to reschedule it by the end of April next year (which is pretty much impossible where I work because of the number of clinic nurses), they are going to code that I'm on vacation the first week after I start my medical leave, then I'll use my sick days and then be off on unpaid medical leave.

I could have opted to have the vacation time paid out to me, but employment insurance would have taken that lump sum into account and it would have affected any benefits that I'm entitled through them.

So the fact that I'll only be missing 2 pay cheques is a huge burden off of my mind.

That is great your work is going to work with you. A lot won't. I know this from having to deal with mine when I was pregnant.

Take care!!! :) Thanks for the update :)

I hope the rest of your ordeal goes smoother then having to deal with EI and it's stupidity. Glad to see your work is working with you. Best Wishes.

Ok, your HR is awesome.  Just throwing that out there.

Cancer is scary.  It helps to have positive people around you, and you've got some of us here :)  It also sounds like you've got some folk on your end to help you emotionally, so that helps out a TON.  In my experience (I haven't ever had cancer, but I have many family members who have), emotional support is an absolute necessity :)

I work at a cancer centre, so everyone has been really great.  A few of the nurses have been my sounding board and have been a great help.  Even my manager who had her own cancer scare and went though a hysterectomy last year, has been amazing.

I can't say that another place would be so understanding and flexible, but because we work with cancer patients everyday, there is lots of understanding and compassion.  For that I'm thankful for.  The last thing I needed right now is a battle for time off or anything of that nature.
