My Cable company which provides my cable internet is really good and it providies fast internet. But every so often, the internet keeps shutting off. You either have to wait, OR you have to reset the modem by disconnecting it ..leaving it disconnected for a few minutes then reconnecint it.
But what happens when you want to l eave a download overnight or leave it downloading while you go to work hoping that when you come back , your file will have finished downloading.
That just sucks that i get disconnections at random times.but i guess i can't do nothing, can i?
And is it the fault of the ISP or just that you have to periodically disconnect and connect your modem so it gets refreshed? I never really do it until my internet disconnects. then i know i have to do it.

This is a well-known problem with Comcast. It seems to vary with time and place. Some
people have to reboot the modem every day. I've had the problem occasionally, but it's
running 100% steady this month. Knock on silicon.

I didn't find cable based internet filled my needs. I had Time Warner and not only did they break the connections randomly, I had to share bandwidth with everybody in the building. So like when kids get home from school, it totally bogs.
I finally switched to DSLextreme and have satisfactory speed and continuous access.

My cable's pretty reliable (it better be - the hub works for the cable company...lol) but once in a great we have to reboot the modem.

Dunno. I have DSL over here from Sky. No problems at all.

mine stays on 24/7 unless a power failure i have roadrunner cable

I have Roadrunner also and have an APC battery backup connected. power failures are never a problem with this. A while back I lost quite a bit of work from a power failure and after that is when I got a battery backup.

I have AT&T DSL and it rarely goes down and if it does it's back up usually within minutes.

I have AT&T Uverse it never dies, never shuts down. I used to have Suddenlink and it was down at least once or twice a week.

I once had this problem when I had Comcast. Check your signal level:
My problem was the upstream level was too high. It turned out there was a loose connection between the modem and the wall jack, but keep in mind, the bad connection could be inside the wall, so it that's the issue, you need to check every connection back to the cable to check it before you call Comcast, as they will charge you for the service call if the problem is in your house (unless you are paying extra for the wire plan).
I happened to have a long piece of Coax that I used to bypass everything for testing......

Well, I shouldn't have said Comcast was running well.
This morning it's losing DNS again.

Check with Comcast... when they were doing maintenance in our area, they were resetting equipment, which caused most users to need to reset Modems in our area. This went on for several months. At the time I was working with some people in Japan and kept getting bounced around 2 every morning my time, otherwise, I would not have noticed. Comcast did not offer any help, but they did give me a discount for the time this was going on. Most users are not online overnight, so it is a good time to do maintenance.

I'm with ratscloset, you shouldn't lose connection on a regular basis with cable. It's definately the ISP's problem. I've been dealing with a dns problem here, everyone watns to pass the buck and blame my computer(s)., but I've had good signal strength for weeks and weeks. Cable is designed to be up %100 of the time. If you get your TV from the same company do you have issues with your cable TV at the same time of day (or night)?

at L.A. comcast top speed (~30 mbps) what kind of file requires overnite downloading? even
warez can't be that large. but in L.A., in this kind of heat, their equipment is gonna blow
periodically. also if there's wind, rain, vandalism, you name it.

Yes i get the Cable that goes to the TV from the same company i get cable for internet..
And the TV signal usually never goes out.

I have Time Warner and same problem. I noticed it usually only cuts me off when I have too much going on at once, or I have my Opera settings cranked too far up. But a reset always fixes it. Used to have DSL. Technically slower, but realistically faster because you have your own line instead of a shared one. Man I miss it....

I have Time Warner too...doesn't usually drop out (every now and again, but weeks instead of days). However, the slowdowns I get too...another possibility (especially if you're in apartments) is 'leaching' ; someone logging into the net from your wireless . Though late at night, it might not be that)

Comcast will put the whammy on people downloading large files. Network Management, the lawsuit calls it.
