I'm considering going 64bit.  Current specs:

3.0GHz Core 2 Duo
512MB GeForce 9800 GT
4GB RAM
Win7 HP 32bit

Will going 64bit make much of a difference in performance with PPro 2010?

Really depends on what you do with your computer.
I do a lot of 3d modeling, rendering and video editing...and yes, x64bit made a big difference. I noticed that all of my "more intense" programs (max, photoshop, zbrush) performed remarkably better. A whole lot less (if any) crashes.

With specs like that it won't make much of a difference.  Save your money and get a better computer first, it will most likely come with a 64 bit OS.

Yeah, I thought so...

I built the one I'm using, so I'll just have to upgrade at some point.

Thanks.

You really need over 4Gb of RAM to see the difference, so the only thing you really need to do is add at least 2Gb of RAM, but preferable a lot more :-) Then 64bit will be worth it on your system.

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....

You will get 512MB more memory as the graphic card 512MB is included in the 4GB pool, might get more useable memory to as I the 4GB limit restrict you from using swap file.

The real benefit is that it gives you the option to upgrade to more than 4GB,

I also found 32bit poser pro 2010 pretty unstable on my old XP system but it had issues.

Main downside is that you have to reinstall windows, my advise is to go 64 bit then you have to reinstall anyway or wait until you buy more memory.

jestmart: Of course it makes a difference if someone has a 3GHZ duo core and 4 GB RAM, the graphic card is also good. There is absolutely no need to waste money on a new computer.

Nyghtfall: I have a 2,1 GHZ core duo with 6 GB RAM and it makes a BIG difference when I changed from 32 bit to 64 bit two years ago. I still work on XP Prof 64 bit, I used Win 7 for 2 months but I don't like it .

With Poser on 64 bit you are able to load bigger scenes and the rendering is faster. But when you use Win 7 you really need more than 4 GB RAM, I think 8 GB should give you a capable workflow.

For kicks, I backed up all of my stuff and installed the 64bit version of Win7 last night, and then I installed PPro 2010.  There was only a slight, but noticeable, increase in overall performance.  After a brief experiment, I removed Poser, made an image of my 64bit install, and then recovered my 32bit setup.

It felt really nice seeing all 4GB visible in the Control Panel, too.  There's no need for me to build a new computer, or simply upgrade my CPU, but I'm definitely going to stick another 4 GB of RAM into my PC.  Newegg still has the RAM I bought - 4GB for $100 - so no problem there.

On an unrelated note, I noticed that Poser's Library is not dockable in 64bit.  In fact, the square you can click on for docking options in the 32bit version isn't even there.  It's not an issue - I usually leave it undocked in 32bit mode anyway - but I found it rather curious.

I should have pointed out that whenever I evaluate an upgrade I consider two things, price to performance ratio and risk to performance ratio.  In my opinion the specs of that system just doesn't computer on the price to performance ratio.

Memory is a big difference with 2d-3d graphics But for using more memory you need to have 64 bits
And ,during the last 3 years, lots of  programs are going to have 64 bits version (Vue d'esprit, photoshop, carrara pro ,etc) And utilities are too going to have 64 bits versions (ex:O & O software like diskimage, defragmenter etc)
Windows 7 64 bits is excellent  Go for it
I have lots of softs (32 and 64 bits ) and everything working on my 64 bits system and 8 gigs ram

I officially switched to 64bit last night, and finished re-installing all of my apps this morning.

I'm very happy to report that the bump in performances is definitely noticeable.  Under my 32bit setup, the camera movement in the Preview window with the Pose, Hand, and Face cams was a slide show, so I just used Fast Tracking to move around.  Under my new 64bit install, camera movement is smoother.  I don't know how to measure it, but it looked like I was averaging about 15fps while navigating my scene.  I can't wait to add another 4GB of RAM.
