Holy Crow I never imagined this would happen - upstairs I have P7 running from its local install on my laptop.

and downstairs I am trying to run P7 from its local install on my desktop.

I guess I dont know this progeam as well as I thought...so is this the way it is OR how do you work around this???

That is the way it is. IIRC, there is mention of this in the EULA, you can only run one instance of the program on your network.

I believe that your EULA will allow you to use the application "like a book". That is it can only be read in a single location at any one time. There is a pretty obvious work around but to do so contravenes the EULA.

Heh not likely. And I personally think that as long it's personal use within the same household... Well it won't ruin my sleep to contravene it, should one of my kids decide they'd like to try out Poser.

Once they move out of the house, it's another matter :)

Nope, you weren't. :) Probably not best to broadcast how to do it but for those who do, as long as it's just the program owner in one household, like Trekkiegirl said, I see no problem. I often switch back and forth from my desktop to my laptop.

Same and also have it on the machine next to me for those long renders so I don't have my main machine tied up and can continue to work. I was told a while back by someone at Smith Micro that this was ok, since I'm not lending it out or even letting another user in the house have access.

Always remember to let Poser communicate through the Windows Firewall, otherwise it cannot detect this kind of shenanigans.

Yes. At least if you don't want it to check for updates or access Content Paradise.
BUT Poser talks to the computer as well and most firewalls interprete that as "talking to the network" as well, although technically it's not.

So blocking Poser with the firewall will also cripple the renderer and in some versions the library.

Poser 7 can check for updates when you start it, but this can be disabled in the Preferences menu.

Poser Pro and Poser Pro 2010 obviously need to access your local network in order to use network rendering.

Poser 8 and Poser Pro 2010 need access to 127.0.0.1 because the new library is a network application.

e-Frontier used to have an option to buy a second licence at a reduced cost.I got an extra licence because unplugging network cables was too much trouble. I haven't seen this option at S-M though.

The EULA that you accept with the software clearly states that you can only have one instance of the software running. You can purchase a second License at the Upgrade Price using your valid Code. The Price is actually cheaper than the Second License Pricing under e frontier for Poser 5 (It was stopped with Poser 6 and second License was only available at Full Price with Poser 6 and Poser 7)

The Second License links both copies together, so it is not a valid method to purchase another copy for a friend or family member.

With regards to you being the only user. You can install a second copy on a different machine, provided you are the only person with access to both machines (Desktop and Laptop situations for traveling artists) If anyone has access to either machine other than yourself or if you intend to run both machines at the same time, you will need to purchase a second License. (The like a book section of the EULA)

I will add for those that have not noticed... Smith Micro has introduced Hybrid Packaging. This means the Package includes both Windows and MAC installers, so if you change platforms, you do not have to purchase a new license. If you get the download, just make sure you download all the files and back them up by Platform, in case you switch down the road.

If you ever have a question about the License or what you can or can not do with the product, please contact Support. Forums can offer help, but information sometimes is not accurate. Disconnecting from the network to get around the check is still a violation of the EULA. Poser 7 is still available for $49.99 through the Trial Offer Page for Poser... if you need a second license.

actually, seriously i dont think anyone here has or had the intention of skirting the EULA ...it seems all posts were sensitive to respecting the rules and this concept was mentioned a few times previously in the thread :
