I'm working in a city-sized arena. I can't believe I never thought of this before, and I'm sure it's been suggested before but...
Choose one of your cameras and zoom to where you want your character to be. You likely already have the camera there. Go to the edit menu and select "copy settings." Select or create your object and go to the edit menu and choose "Paste Settings."
Blam!
Your object is right where your camera is. If it's a character, you should see the feet, so you should place the camera where you want the feet to be.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip!

Great tip. I do large environments and have never thought of that.
I usually hop between the main camera and perspective camera. I set the main camera to were I want the shot to be taken and do all my setting up in the perspective camera.
If you do an undo when in main camera mode the undo also undoes any positioning you have done of the main camera.
However if you do an undo when in perspective camera mode the undo doesn't effect any positioning done of the perspective camera.
