Ohhhh, I love setting up and shooting still-lifes, although for me that also means getting out the cat repellant. With six very curious furry creatures it can be a challenge all in itself just getting a catless (and cat hairless) shot!

But I shall persevere  😉

They say a picture is worth a thousand words...

So where do they go when a photograph leaves you speechless?

Meisiekind posted Wed, 08 September 2010 at 12:06 PM

Oh Tara - as you are singing my praises - just add yet another bout of flu to the list!!! Yup!!!

Wayne - no worries! Looking forward to see your still lives...

... hopefully without some whiskers or cat hair sticking out the corner... LOL...

TomDart posted Tue, 14 September 2010 at 6:52 PM

My friends, please excuse me for stepping over the edge on this "still life" photo.  It does not fit the definition of a still life but it does represent that  stillness in real life.

A couple of years ago I had my first true exhibit with many of my photos hanging for view and comment and for sale.  This was a a small and very, very popular gourmet cafe which always drew a good crowd and many folks who appreciate art of all sorts.  A while back the cafe closed.  I wish it had not.

By good fortune the building is one business away from being next door  to where I work and I got a key to go in for a moment..  Even with several exhibits since mine, I found a hanger used in my exhibit.  I know it because I made these of drapery hooks to easily hang lightweight matted prints to the carpeted walls.   The hook was likely used in some of  the several exhibits following mine.

It was a dear memory, a piece of the exhibit in place today.  It was a sad memory also. The exhibit was well received and several sales were made.  More than sales, this first public display was for me, for confidence and for encouragement. It did accomplish  both.  Why the sad memory?   The man who opened the cafe departed this earth a few months ago when struck by a car during a personal motorcycle trip to Colorado and beautiful areas of our country.

I said another goodbye to him today when viewing the empty wall where my exhibit once proudly displayed something of me.

Yes, this is a still life of a different sort.   Look for the glint of the hanger hook  in the bottom of the image.

It is really a quiet life then.

Hi friends !  Now i must try to catch up on this. I see some really interesting stillife already.

TomDart posted Wed, 15 September 2010 at 7:59 PM

Yes, it may be a busy time for members and not easy to get a photo done.  A traditional still life does take time and it either works or does not.   Lighting seems mighty important, at least from the paintings I have seen which are still life.  I am not so sure if I am good at it or not..have done a couple traditional ones but that is it.

I will try to get another one up..more traditional perhaps, maybe off the wall.  As for what is here now, honestly I like the personal interpretations here.   The ivory tower dwelling photo arts instructor might not approve but I do for forum fun...I sure do!   The bottle set by aksirp is quite nice and more traditional.  PJ...your pie is still but I bet it was not for long..now being long gone.  That is very enticing, more than apples in a wooden bowl with a candle on an old table lit with candle light and a glint from an open window with no glass, in a room looking  200 years old.

I want to see more!  More food! **More food! ** I have lost 2 lbs and am pleased and have several pounds more to loose  but will look at  tasty delights.  Oh my.

MrsLubner posted Wed, 15 September 2010 at 9:45 PM

As Helle knows, when I start featuring food, I am on a diet.  I may not be able to eat it but I sure can surround myself in it and watch everyone else enjoy it. :-)

I hope to come up with one more still life, but so far, that would probably be a self portrait...I'm sort of inert these days. LOL

I was looking through the contents of the drawer on this old wooden desk, found some things I used to use.  From that, it became a still life.

I put a slightly larger file on my gallery since I may not be drawn to do this sort of photo again...then, who knows what photo "must" be made.

And to Mario, I also prefer more natural and nature but  we do have some nice photos here.  The auto door handle is a different view for certain.

kbrog posted Fri, 17 September 2010 at 10:03 PM

Really haven't done much in the way of Still Life, but I have been trying this month. Already put this up in the gallery. Had some problems using a flash with this shot, seem grapes and flashes don't play well together.  :  Had to use two standing lamps and a ceiling light for this.

mariogiannecchini posted Sat, 18 September 2010 at 1:59 AM

X Tom. I agree for the beautiful photos, I like. What I meant is that I am not led to gender and occasionally shooting something that falls into it. But I admit that someone does really well.

dochtersions posted Sat, 18 September 2010 at 3:24 AM

Auntietk, this is wonderful, GREAT!

Hi Kim , didn't you still eaten your lovely fruit? :D

kbrog posted Sat, 18 September 2010 at 10:49 PM

Yes Mies I ate all the fruit.  :D

If I wasn't going to eat them I would have whip vegetable oil on all the grapes to keep them from coming out looking frosted from the flash. Read about that trick in a Photographic Magazine a long time ago.

myrrhluz posted Sat, 18 September 2010 at 11:48 PM

I've got some catching up to do.
Tom  - Excellent still life.  I saw the hook right away and moving story that made me think of the memories left behind when life is stilled.   I love the lines, wood grain, and lighting of your second one!
PJ - That pie looks delicious.  It looks like cinnamon on the top! Yum! Great capture!
Mies - That is beautiful!  It fits perfectly! I love the textures, brush stokes, and colors.  Nice capture of it too!
Mario - That's a still life I saw a lot of when Tropical Storm Hermine came through San Antonio.  Great detail and lighting and great capture of the drops and all their shapes and sizes.
Tara - Lovely!  Wonderful detail of the wood grain, and the grape patterns.
kbrog - Delicious looking fruit!  It looks great against the dark background.  Beautiful capture of the glass bowl.

myrrhluz posted Sat, 18 September 2010 at 11:55 PM

I haven't done much of this before, but here goes.  I'll start with the one that is most like what I think of when I think of still life.  It is a perfume bottle,  science toy, and little Highland cow figure.

myrrhluz posted Sat, 18 September 2010 at 11:57 PM

Science toy again, with candle behind it.

myrrhluz posted Sat, 18 September 2010 at 11:58 PM

Hey Kim, what a nice idea, with that oil.
Would like ones, to see a result from that.

Good Sunday to all of you!

A demonstration of what I said earlier here is a shot at the occasional dinner party for a degree awarded by a young friend a few days ago (I was the photographer for the wedding of the parents about 40 years ago, of course in B & W).

Parts of my cellar have been untouched since the previous owner died 11 years ago at age 90. Talk about still life... ;o) Still life as a genre is often applied to play with volumes of color, lines and textures. I tried to do that here...

Wow, Helle, how I like your still life's. That shining one with the frog, is most impressing, although I love your last one also very much!
When you ever need money, you can sell them to me.... perhaps ???? 😉

helanker posted Sun, 26 September 2010 at 5:15 AM

Thanks Carin.
As long as i can remember (and that till about my thirth year) my grandma had this little girl standing on the top of her display cabinet. Later my uncle bought the house and i got the little statue. The other one is a little faun made in Danish royal porcelain..... not so old :-)

Gran bel programma quello di tua nipote: io ho sempre pensato che il più bello strumento musicale sia l'orchestra . Deve essere un pioacere eccezionale quando tanti professori aspettano un tuo gesto per dare il meglio di sè . Tanti auguri a tua nipote ! Serve un ricambio per Muti , grande direttore. BUona settimana , M.C.,

To close in "sweetness" my participation in this challenge, here are figs laid on a texture  provided by Mario, a valued friend!
Thanks Mario, also for valuable advice on Photoshop! :-)

A good week to everyone of you!   :-)

emmecielle posted Mon, 27 September 2010 at 3:11 AM

Non è facile diventare direttore d'orchestra... la strada è molto lunga e, specialmente per una donna, piena di ostacoli! Spero solo che il suo sogno possa avverarsi...  lei ce la sta mettendo tutta! :-)

helanker posted Mon, 27 September 2010 at 3:33 AM

Awww that is indeed a lovely and ... sweet still life Well done.

aksirp posted Mon, 27 September 2010 at 3:37 AM

wonderful figs, dolce still live!

mariogiannecchini posted Mon, 27 September 2010 at 4:57 AM

Excellent achievement! You have done a great job! It was worth it. Based think it's easier to do than to say

emmecielle posted Mon, 27 September 2010 at 5:14 AM

Grazie Mario! :-)

Thank you Mario! I labored a bit, but then I found a way to put  these blessed figs on the texture....
I made trasparent the lower area of the photo with the figs and then I glued it on your texture, with the drop shadow option I gave a little thick to fruit ... I believe that the result is good enough, right? :-)

emmecielle posted Mon, 27 September 2010 at 5:16 AM

Many thanks, Helle and Priska!  I'm glad you like it!   :-)

Meisiekind posted Mon, 27 September 2010 at 7:48 AM

Two wonderful additions to the forum - the shadow of the umbrella and the lovely fruit bouquet!
Well done indeed!!
