Subject: Creating a glowing ball of light

What's the best way to create a glowing ball of light, like a white, glowing crystal ball sort of thing, in Poser? I have Poser Pro 2010, by the way.

It's probably not the best way but I have done this by using the sphere prop and  a pin light (I think that's the right type of light--it's the one that shows up as a sphere.).  I used a crystal material on the sphere.  I then moved the light inside the sphere and parented it to the sphere.  If you move the sphere, the light moves with it.

In PP 2010, set your ball prop ambient_value to 1 or higher, and use IDL in your render settings.  The surrounding material will respond better to the resulting illumination from the prop.  Pigfish9's method is the older, acceptable method, but why not take advantage of the bells n' whistles provided by PP 2010.

Agreed, and set the ambient to MUCH higher than 1 if you want significant glow.

As Bagginsbill would (and has) said, the ambient setting represents the heat of the glow (sort of), so for real serious glow you gotta get it REALLY hot.

I've used ambient of 100.0 in some renders...

these were also possible in poser 7, but it looked lousy IMVHO.

Actually, there is a flat plane image map placed before a color tinted ball primitive.  Ambient_value was set to 10, and all other lights deleted from the scene.  The difference with IDL is that the resulting ambient illumination creates a more realitistic light/material response.  I could accomplish a similar situation with a point light set to inverse square attenuation for a natural light falloff with distance.
