I was wondering if anyone can recommend a clothing making software program for 3d.  I have seen this program called Optitex but I dont no if its any good? Anyone use that and how good is it?
or anyone have another suggestion? I am not a fan of 3dsmax clothing modifier. Their has to be better options out there? Thanks

If you need to create conforming clothing then either ZBrush or 3DCoat will work great.

I was thinking more dynamic clothing. I rather like the idea that Optitex has of making patterns etc.
Like maybe do that at the start to get shapes right and then bring into mudbox for some basic wrinkles and export again in max. Some work flow kind of like that.
Any other ideas from anyone?

Hexagon works well and it's inexpensive. Wings3D is what I create my dynamic clothes in and it's free.

For now, I'm using Hexagon 1.2 for modeling clothes and doing the texturing in 3DCoat 3.5.  I'm using Poser 6 for dynamic clothing since my version of Vue can import it.

Eventually, I'd like to use ZBrush 4 for modeling and texturing clothing (have to learn it first though).  modo 501 may have some nice cloth features.  I use 401 for just rendering.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. Hexagon looks pretty nice. If I were you I would look at mudbox before zbrush.
Mudbox is way easier to learn. Zbrush has a higher learning curve and I couldnt stand it. I think that difficulty alone may eventually leave zbrush behind as other programs pickup its capabilities and churn out more great art.

I don't much care for ZBrush's GUI.  But Pixologic keeps offering me free upgrades for it.  Each time I think I'm going to make time to learn it fully instead of just the couple uses I have for it.  It's sculpting is quick and easy to get nice detail for the times I do use it.  Much better than Hexagon 2.5's sculpting.

Just curious: how much IS an Optitex license, anyway? I thought the price might be rather prohibitive, especially for hobby software....

What I find between the couch-cushions, you really wouldn't get much more for than just the wrinkled nose and a chorus of "ewwwwww" from my girls... :biggrin:

Besides, wouldn't that Optitex be more to make stuff for Daz Studio ... or does it export to obj or some Poser-compatible format as well?

AFAIK, Optitex is the only maker of dynamic clothing for DS, since dynamic cloth in DS is proprietary.

Well I have tryed hexagon now today and looked at tutes on the tube and I am sold.
Maybe I missed it but can you set pictures as backgrounds in hexagon for reference?

I couldnt even find the cost of optiquest but this hexagon is pretty great so far so I am bailin on optitex.

The Small Busness version of Optitex is available on in the UK and is selling for 999 pounds.

Hmmmmm there MUST be a cushion I haven't shifted... maybe there might be a few coins under the bed, or in the laundry.

There's a substantial support base for Wings3D, which seems reasonably straight-forward to learn. I'd be choosing software for which I know there's a friendly, keen-to-help user base who won't give you "RTFM" when you ask questions.

I don't remember if you can or not (I think maybe background), but if you can't here's a neat little utility that will always keep something in the foreground for you and you can adjust opacity.

It works with other programs.  But Hexagon doesn't need it.

How about Marvelous Designer? www.marvelousdesigner.com It is on beta but looks really easy-to-use. And it seems to be compatible with V4 and M4. 

MD2 doesn't have a price for Basic yet.  But they'll have a Free version though that doesn't do OBJ exporting.  Looks interesting the way the pattern is cut out first rather than after the cloth is placed over the figure like other programs do.
