I would have asked this at the 2D forum, but it seems kind of dead.
Anyhow, does anybody know if the current Intuos stylus works with the older tablets? I know for sure the Graphire one doesn't. (I don't understand why they'd break compatibility like that when the functions supported in the stylus seem exactly the same.)
I'm asking this, because I managed to get an Intuos2 6x8 USB on eBay for $80. But it only had a mouse included. In working order and no obvious scratches, so I think I did ok. (A bit funny in retrospect I think, because the other tablet I bid on with the stylus included went higher than the price of a new one.)
I do consider this an upgrade from my Graphire3. (Which is what got me hooked.) I ran through the tablet control panel and did the CTRL-click on the about to get the diagnostic. I'm surprised at how much greater the resolution/range is. (I knew it was more, but not by what factor.)

sorry i can't say for sure, but i've never had any luck with stylus between tablets.
maybe someone else has, but i couldn't...

I'll take back the part about the Intuos4 4 stylus having the same functionality. They actually doubled sensitivity from 1024 steps to 2048. Yet I wonder if Intuos 2 and 3 styluses are compatible. (Both of those are 1024).
Still even though it's an older model, 1024 pressure levels and bigger X & Y... Oh and tilt... That's better than the Graphire. I did manage to hunt down an Intuos 2 Classic stylus, I just hope I don't get out-bid.

You can buy them direct from the wacom site but I'm sure they will cost ya more than ebay prices.

Yeah... Every auction I tried for the pen stylus would get into the "Buy now" territory or end up sniped. And I'm not pushing my bids past that, so I just went "aaah fudge" and did the "Buy now" thing. Still managed $15 less (and with free S&H) than what retailers on the google search were wanting.
Even the old tablets demand a premium. But Wacom still has the best technology... I'm sure some people will be happy when the patents finally run out and other brands can use the transponder tech and perhaps make a few compatible devices. Some actual competition would help with the prices.

These are the best prices I found out there for the I2 pen.
I'm using a Cintiq, though I never tried my I2 pen on the Cintiq before I sold the I2/
