Subject: CS4 save for web doesn't compress very much

I just got a new machine and installed CS4. I was going to Save for Web, but the 4 choices are still huge file sizes and I can't upload them to the gallery. I was using my old CS image ready, which reduces the .jpegs down nice and low for uploading. Is there a setting in CS4 that will offer smaller file sizes? This is the main reason I never used it after I got it. Thanks

In the top right corner of the “Save for Web” window is the optimize menu.

Clicking on that will give you a choice to optimize for size.

Note: this is on CS5, but I’m fairly sure it’s in the same place on CS4.

Yep it is pretty much the same as CS4

I just tried that and the result was awful. I set it to 256k which is about what I got with the old Image Ready, but it grayscaled it and it was real grainy.

What are the dimensions of your image? Are you in RGB mode? Are you selecting JPEG in the Save for Web & Devices window? Do you have optimized checked?

I discovered my mistake. I was saving in .gif format. I changed it to .jpeg and now it works great. Thanks!
