Thank you Priska for the well wishes! I agree - it is just a guideline but often we can have such stronger compositions by just following this simple rule!

Christo - three perfect images of the "Rule of Thirds"!!! Well done indeed.

I am looking forward to seeing many, many images this month!

wild_child - lovely example of the "rule". Wonderful image!

I would probably have probably cropped it down a tad more at the top and left - but that's just me! :):)

Meisiekind posted Mon, 03 January 2011 at 10:09 AM

Blinkings and Priska - welcome to the challenge with great images!

Priska - it isn't the easiest, but once you have this "rule" imbedded in your photography, I bet you you will produce stronger composed images! Go for it!!!

This is a difficult one to fit the "rule".   Truly, the sycamore tree is a bit busy and the compositon is not good.  Would one of you do it differently?

Oh, see on the branches?  That is clumps of mistletoe, to hold over the head at Christmastime and New Years to be rewarded with a kiss.   I stood under the tree for several minutes..no kiss. Oh well, too far from other people at the time.  I will try maybe again on 7 January, the Orthodox calendar Christmas.

Tom Where do you live ;-)  Just kidding :)

Carin I can almost not get out of the house to take new shots and i forgot my camera yesterday, when we went shopping :-/  Hope il be able to take some soon.

Meisiekind posted Tue, 04 January 2011 at 9:44 AM

Priska - I like the candles. You could also try them in portrait format!

Tom - I would do you sycamore tree shot exactly the same. The sycamore is basically exactly on the third line. I do not believe you could have done it differently! :) Well done!

I am enjoying this!!! Let me go snap something!

Some random old guy ice fishing at a marina.

"Rule of Thirds" is often one of the first things I think of when composing a shot. (Unless it's some kind of fast action "snap-now!" deal, in which case my composition is more a matter of luck. Of course an old guy fishing doesn't present that kind of problem.)

And last is a pic of this condo/apartment building with a funny "Dr. Seuss" looking overhanging spire. Perhaps not as strong as the other two pics, but I've got to work with what I've got.

Colene - Excellent examples of rule of thirds in both the zebra and beach images!

Emmecielle - Perfect example too! It looks like a pomegranate!

I read the challenge info on the 1st and have been itching to have at it ever since. Finally had a chance this morning and decided the new arrival to my window-sill garden  fit the bill.

Now I'm off to ponder the next two shots...

Here's my second attempt. Found something crystalized on top of a canning jar lid way in the back of the shelf while cleaning out the fridge yesterday. Decided it would make for an intersting image so I set it aside until this morning's eastern light that floods the kitchen.

I'm pretty sure that defines me as a bona fide "photo nut"

These are coots and coots are not ducks; technically an American Coot is swimming rail. They are cute little waterfowl but difficult to expose with the dark slate body, darker neck and quite white beak.

I title this:  " So where do the feet go?"

Notice, the feet are not webbed as with a duck but do have toes with  swimming fins.

LovelyPoetess posted Sun, 30 January 2011 at 11:26 PM

Hmmmm, I wonder if these little feathered critters are the basis for the old saying "an old coot"

Thanks Tom for the info. Nice shot too.

Are these exotic footprints of some kind?  The shapes have more distinct "fingers" than I would think from a dog..coon, something else?

LovelyPoetess posted Mon, 31 January 2011 at 10:08 AM

Tom, they are racoon prints.

I've bottle fed a few sets of baby racoons and they have the softest paw pads I've ever felt, like velvet. And those little paws explore everything. Their curiosity overshadows even a cats.
