Hi all,
I've been away from the 'rendering' scene for a few years - the last product I used was Poser 4.0, though I have version 6.0 floating around somewhere. Anyway, onto my question.
I'm thinking about purchasing DAZ Studio. However, I would like to know how much of what is currently available from vendors will actually work with this product?
I guess what I'm saying is that I don't want to spend my hard earned cash on a product that will be of little use to me, or provide me with less than I already have.
All answers greatly appreciated.
Dannii.

Hi Dannii,
I use Daz Studio 3 Pro, and also make all the products I sell here compatible for DAZ Studio 3 Free and Pro.
When you are going to purchase some products, look in the requirements to see if they are only compatible for Poser, or if they say that they will not work in DS.
Most of the content will "work" in DAZ Studio. The only problem is that any object that uses displacemnet or bump maps, and also many other features, may display different in DAZ Studio when rendered.
Also, Poser products that use Poser's shaders won't work in DS.
That's why I make the DS material presets and put them on the same folder, so when you click them in DS the correct preset is applied. Most vendors don't do this.
In addition, I am now experimenting with DS 3 Pro. I have seen that with the correct render settings and using a plugin included in the Pro version called Uberenvironment (very easy to use, just 2 clicks), the render you get is of better quality than the poser average render.
As a brief:
If you don't use Uberenvironment and use products not ready for DAZ Studio, your renders will look like crap most of the time.
If you use raytraced or good shadow mapped lights, your render will look better.
If you use products ready for DS, with decent render settings and some normal light, even with no shadows, they will look great.
If you use Uberenvironment, you will be amazed of the great renders you get.
That's why you sometimes see DS renders that are amazing and others that look like crap.

Product ready for Poser only + DS without uberenvironment = crap
Poser only product + DS Pro + Uberenvironment = good or acceptable
DS ready product + DS Free or DS Pro = good or great
DS ready product + DS Pro + Uberenvironment = Usually great

i have D/S 3.1 advanced as well and i find mainly only poser materials (not textures but actual baked materials) and poser dynamic products are about the only things that do not work in D/S 2.3 or D/S 3 free or adv
i don't have any poser specific lights or light gels from freebies as well that's how i find out if they work rather than buying them and finding out after spending the money

There is another issue. Sometimes Poser files come with a separate PMD file. This causes problems for Daz Sudio. You will have to get the free InjectPMD plugin by DeltaX15 over at Daz Forums. This plugin works for PZ2 files but will not work for PP2 files.
BTW you should try the free version of Daz Studio first to see if it suits your workflow.
