Could some one please tell me how to get the file extentions to show?

I found the folder option and hide extentions was already unchecked. Is seems Photoshop 3 won't save a JPEN. It doesn't add an extention, no image shows, and when I try to reopen the file it says the file is unknown. Apparently it does open PSD files.
