Remember my laptop had gone to the hospital a few months ago for ten days? Well..was rendering Saturday night..you know..the dollhouse thinggy a couple posts back.. had finally put the forks on the table..and the spoons..and was thinking of asking you guys what else to do with it. Did a preview render.. and the laptop blinked. Oh man.. qucikly saved my work, and shut down the laptop for the night.. give it a rest..

Woke up in the morn.. switched it on again to check my mail and read the news..and oh help..it wouldn't come back on. I went thru a quiet panic attack. One of my friends called up..and I blurted it all out to him. He kindly suggested that he'd lend me his daughter's desktop in return for me teaching her how to bake choc cake. At least..till I get back the laptop from the laptop hospital..

So here I am folks. With a 1g Ram desktop..the trial version of photoshop installed since I had a design to get done for a museum. Luckily..I had sent them a psd version of the latest design ..so it was in my gmail. I can't put bryce.. and I don't think I can put anything else on it..

The verdict of my laptop? Dunno..not for another week or ten days. the hard drive..phew..is not the problem..it's soemthing to do with the pwoer stuff on the motherbboard.

Sigh..

ok..so it's a bit better this time with the desktop at home. At least am not in a noisy cafe..but I miss my lappie! And I do feel akward borrowing someone else's computer. It's not like as if it's pillows or something light.. it's a computer, for heaven sake..

 sigh..

I have to admit that this is one of the reasons that I have 2 desktops and 1 laptop. I let the desktops take care of the Big work when it comes to my 3d modelling/rendering and my Music side whilst the laptop takes care of my internet work and docs etc. Desktops do tend to be a lot more sturdy when it comes to heavy loads.

I hope you get your system sorted soon.

Hi Rosie,

oh no... not again!!! :(

That laptop is really giving you hard times! Good luck for a quick and not too expensive repair! (Besides: I too assume occasional heat issues with that laptop and, as benney does, would always recommend to use a desktop computer for excessive render purposes instead.)

My not to helpful suggestion (i.e. while it is being repaired and as soon as you finished cooking TheBryster's little lambs -- do mine medium please!):
Ask Woody to rent you his new laptop. (Cf here http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=2144247 )

His model seems very robust, even if not being from "Apple". And if you grovel enough, it would cost you only a small symbolic fee of few Dollars per minute. Less than half the costs as Woody gets charged... by Uncle Herby!  ;)

Hugs!

I will keep trying, Rosie, if only to make the point to my damn pc that it should do as it's told.

The thing is, of all the other camera brands it has on the list, Canon isn't one of them. I did have it all working a few weeks ago, but now it isn't. The driver is installed but I keep getting 'Can't connect with camera' when I loadup the Canon photo software.......

It's ok though if you can't get it to work.. that you tried is so much appreciated. though i do agree..your pc ought to follow your orders, your majesty! :-p Hugs and love you lots.

Hubert.. ahem..can I please rent Woody's computer? As much as i grumbled about the price, I think I'll happily pay you 100 dollars an hour! Iloved it! Thanks for making em laugh! As for serving you lamb.. ahem.. .. what would you like with that? Brown sauce, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, salad...and .... watch out..DUCK!!! There's a pillow wop heading your way! :-p :-p

Hugs and cheers you all...

Hubert posted Wed, 06 April 2011 at 3:42 PM

Hi Rosie,

glad that I could cheer you up a little bit. I would happily give you that laptop even for free.... but Uncle Herby just doubled its rental charge due to a "suddenly increased market demand" or so!

Regarding the lambs: I meanwhile am sure that TheBryster uses this (presumed) camera problem as a shabby excuse, because he already ate all lambs himself! ;)

Hey, Hubert! I swear it's the truth.

I plug my camera into the usb port and switch it on. The PC bing-bongs to tell me its connected. In device manager an icon appears telling me there is a digital camera connected to the system. BUT......the software - Camera Window - doesn't load up and when I force it, it tells me it 'Cannot detect camera - please check connection and try again'. EX-Browser - the Canon photo imaging software does the same thing when I tell it to download my pics from the camera.

It's driving me nuts.

Bryster,

Have you done the standard things -

a) see if the camera appears in the file explorer?

b) remove and then re-install the driver

c) looked in device mangler to see what it says about the driver / device status?

----------

Toolset: Blender, GIMP, Indigo Render, LuxRender, TopMod, Knotplot, Ivy Gen, Plant Studio.

TheBryster posted Thu, 07 April 2011 at 7:25 AM Forum Moderator

Gog:

a) Huh?

b) Did that three or four times -

c) This device is working correctly.

It seems that the driver is not triggering the software. But thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Hi Bryster,

glad to read that the connection and transfer (suddenly) worked.

I noticed too late that this thread already got a 2nd page! (Blame my old 4 inch amber monitor!).

So my suggestions below are merely for error tracking purposes (or to be ignored).

What did change during these past weeks, that might have affected that USB communication??

PS: I noticed the old time stamp on those (presumed faked/rendered) photos and doubt, if those lambs are still alive! ;)

Hubert, the photos were taken a couple of days ago now. Fake timestamp indeed!

As for the solution, I noticed that when I plugged the camera in and swtiched it on, the pc bing-bonged to let me know it had made the connection. So, looking at the Device Manager list, I could see an icon for an imaging device/digital camera appear. It's properties confirmed that it was for a Canon digital camera.

So I deleted the icon. The camera icon disappeared and my camera switched itself off. I switched it on again and the PC instantly recognised the camera and fired up the cannon software!!! So, atm it all works very well.

Thanks for your list of possible solutions though.

For Rosie....

And me sure those adorable lambs are alive..he won't slaughter them..I hope...

Kinda late to this thread..

Sorry to hear your laptop woes.  Here are my 2 cents on the subject.

  1. Never use your laptop on any other surface other than a Hard Surface, a computer desk for example.

Never use a laptop on your lap, arm of a couch, pillow, blanket, or kitchen table with a table cloth on it.

The laptop needs good  airflow underneath to stay cool.  So if you place the laptop on a pillow or on the arm of the couch, the vents under neath will be blocked and the tiny little fan in the laptop will not be able to cool it down properly, which will lead to early laptop failure.

2.  Laptops are not designed for long term cpu intensive applications.  Photoshop for example is fine for a Laptop, but 3D Rendering is not.

Consider saving money for a Desktop just for renders.

Having a PC dedicated for rendering will have the added benefit that you can truly multi task.

While your PC is rendering, you can still work on Photoshop on your laptop and able to surf the web and check your e-mails.

I'm going to post about my new PC shortly, which might give you an idea.

Instead of champagne, could I get some wood glue for Woody, to keep his big mouth shut over weekend?

Even better news for you: I have stopped eating those lambs!!!!
But only because they were too difficult to peel and I still have some wool stuck between my teeth, which feels like extreme-flossing. And I won´t even start to discuss their (pure natural?) filling... need a keg of 18year old Scottish Single Malt now, to compensate that awful experience.....

Didnt realise Rosie is in India.

She asks a valid question.  I wonder if you put the pc into hybernate right in the middle of a render and resume it, if Bryce will crash or continue.

The reason this got me thinking is, you can get a small UPS that attaches to your PC and can be configured to automatically shutdown a pc in the event of power loss.

So for example if she was rendering over night and the power went out, her UPS could put her PC into hybirnate.

I'll have to do some tests.

Chocolate Oreos are great!! Whereas I always replace their imho too sweet creme filling with ##BEEP## creme. (Censored by the LTO -- Local Taste Office.)

leave my poor lambs alone.
Please don´t worry about their fate... they themselves needn´t worry any longer either. (Disclaimer: I did not do them any harm! You may believe me! Besides, do you want to buy a used car from me??)

you mean incompassionate inhumane man that you are..
Now you sound exacly like my ninth ex-wife!! (Exaggerated value, for dramatization purposes only.)

and go tell me what to do with my dollhouse! :glare:
Woody would be glad to visit your doll's house... but the R'osity TOS would not allow me to post any photos afterwards. Sorry, they simply lack the apt tags here.

and give me that bottle of Macallan.. good scotch is a waste on you if you use it to concoct such a ghastly drink that even frankenstein won't drink!
Ey, that drink was intended for you, not that Frankenstein, whom I did not even invite! Besides, that drink contained only half of the required ingredients, because you were not that nice to me before!  ;)

And now excuse me... I need a brain to... IGOR?!!... get me Woody and two lambs...!!
