to bad that polygroups are again turned off.

Pret-A-3D, or paolo, of REALITY fame built the importer back in the day. he posted that he doesn't have time now to keep it up because of his work with REALITY . so unless someone picks up that project, polygroups probably will continue not to work.
ice-boy posted Sat, 16 April 2011 at 5:13 AM
if they could teach us how to turn it on?
polygroups are not just for poser. its also for vertex groups.
i like blender but some there are crazy if they think that vertex groups are not important.
kobaltkween posted Sat, 16 April 2011 at 5:35 AM
i think if it was just a toggle, it would have been done. let me see if i can find his post about it. this is what he said, "I didn't have the time to follow Blender's Python update because of my work on Reality. Maybe in the future..." and just from poking around, yeah, they seem to be changing how things work pretty constantly and fast. like basic structure. i don't think they keep the Blender API even close to stable, from what i've read in random comments here and there. i'm sure updating is possible, just non-trivial.

they said that now the API is stable

Polygroups are supported for OBJ export.
ice-boy posted Sat, 16 April 2011 at 10:36 AM
it works with exporting?
so only importing is the problem?
bob1965 posted Sat, 16 April 2011 at 11:16 AM
Correct.
Create your mesh and create the necessary vertex groups.
When exporting the object deselect the groups option and select the polygroups option.
Import saved object into Poser and the polygroups will be present.

i have teh old 2.5 beta from 2010. there importing works.
the reason i am using blender 2.5 for importing is that the material names are the same. with 2.49 i noticed that materials change names. which is not good.
bob1965 posted Sun, 17 April 2011 at 6:39 AM
Official release 2.56a is the last release to support polygroups fully. Haven't tested backward and forward compatibility with the 2.57 stable release yet.
The random material consolidation you saw in the 2.4x series is due to the 16 materials per object limit that has since been removed in the 2.5x series.
